Introduction and local significance
The Leonese municipality of Almanza hosts a new edition of MicoAlmanza, a well-established event centred around the world of mushrooms and traditional cooking. This eleventh edition takes place from 6 to 8 November 2026 and brings together enthusiasts and experts in the fungal kingdom. The Leonese town combines mycological dissemination with specific culinary proposals in local establishments during these days.
Historical origins and tradition
This festival revolves around the collection and study of mushroom species native to the region. Participants have guided field trips led by experts for the collection of specimens in the natural environment. Subsequently, activities move to the Casa de la Cultura de Almanza for the classification of the species found and the delivery of informative talks focused on local mycology.
Programme and main events
The official programme includes the calls for the Mushroom Tapas Fair and mycological days led by specialists such as José María Escapa, president of the San Jorge Mycological Association. The central events combine the morning field trip on Saturday with afternoon sessions of classification and lectures on the mushrooms of the Cea River. For detailed timings of each activity, the official programme available in the festival's information can be consulted.
Traditional festival food
The culinary aspect stands out for the dishes with mushrooms offered by the bars and restaurants of Almanza. Bar Luis prepares a stuffed pepper with cheek meat accompanied by boletus, while Restaurante La Torre serves a vol-au-vent filled with boletus, brie cheese, and caramelised onion with Prieto Picudo. Meanwhile, Bar Jaque offers a crepe filled with mushrooms and bacon with boletus cream, and Bar Universal completes the offer with its specific MicoMenu.
Visitor guide and where to stay
It is advisable to book accommodation in advance for the festival dates, as the influx of visitors increases in the municipality. On the busiest days, it is preferable to use public transport or leave vehicles in designated areas outside the urban centre. Staying in Almanza itself or in nearby towns makes it easier to follow the scheduled events, especially during peak times. It is recommended to check for any updates on timings before starting your journey.
