Introduction and local significance

The Feria del Pan in Alfacar is an event dedicated to highlighting the baking trade that defines the economic and cultural identity of this town in Granada. The 2026 edition will be held from 14 to 18 October, coinciding with the week of World Bread Day, which is commemorated every 16 October. During these days, the municipality organises various activities to recognise the work of its artisans and spread traditional production techniques, attracting visitors interested in the area's gastronomic heritage.

Historical origins and tradition

Alfacar's connection to baking has been documented since the 16th century, a time when the town already had working mills and ovens. A distinctive element of its production has historically been the water from Fuente Grande, a natural resource that, combined with the use of sourdough and traditional baking techniques, gives the bread its characteristic properties. In the past, the Moorish ovens were fuelled by thyme and rosemary wood gathered in the forests of La Alfaguara. This tradition has been preserved to the present day, and today it enjoys the protection of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Pan de Alfacar, which endorses four artisanal formats: bollo (bread roll), rosco (ring-shaped bread), rosca (large ring-shaped bread) and hogaza (loaf).

Programme and main events

The programme for this edition includes various activities, ranging from inclusive workshops dedicated to making borondas (traditional flatbreads) to specific workshops for baking families. On Sunday 18 October, the Plaza de la Iglesia is the focus of the main events, which include the migas (fried breadcrumbs) competition, live cooking demonstrations and a tribute to octogenarian bakers. Additionally, the 1st 'El Pan en Imágenes' Photography Contest is being held to capture the local baking tradition from its ovens to its protagonists. To check the detailed schedule of each activity, it is recommended to review the official programme before visiting.

Traditional festival food

The star product is the bread, made under the standards of the PGI Pan of Alfacar, which attendees can purchase and taste during the event. On Sunday, migas take on special relevance during the competition held in the square, becoming one of the main dishes of the fair. On the other hand, in the previous workshops it is possible to learn about the production process of borondas. Finally, the San Sebastián Festival Committee organises a charity afternoon snack where fritters and chocolate are served to close the programme.

Visitor guide and where to stay

On the days with the highest turnout, it is best to use public transport or look for parking outside the town centre. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance, with staying in the municipality itself or in nearby towns being a good option to facilitate following the scheduled events. Before travelling, it is essential to consult the official programme, as schedules and events may be subject to last-minute changes.
