Introduction and local significance
The 13th Feria Ganadera in Benaocaz takes place from 9 to 12 October 2026, coinciding with the Pilar long weekend. This annual event in the Sierra de Cádiz focuses on the exhibition of more than 300 heads of livestock from around 40 farms, aiming to highlight local livestock farming and the conservation of native breeds. This year's edition, which introduces cattle as a novelty, offers the opportunity to get a close look at the work of producers in the region.
Historical origins and tradition
The 13th Feria Ganadera in Benaocaz stems from the municipality's close historical ties with herding and livestock breeding. The event is organised by the Ayuntamiento de Benaocaz and the Asociación de Ganaderos de Benaocaz, entities that work alongside the Diputación de Cádiz to maintain rural traditions. The event is a tribute to the efforts of farming families, whose work is essential to preserving species such as the Payoya goat and the Grazalema Merino sheep, key elements of the area's rural heritage.
Programme and main events
The fair's programme combines a technical and professional side with activities open to all visitors. The central focus is on morphological contests, where the characteristics of the animals are evaluated and genetic improvement promoted by local farms is rewarded. Among the highlights is the reveille (diana) that winds through the streets with the participation of the fair's animals, as well as cheese-making workshops and the exhibition of works submitted to the Merino sheep photography contest. To plan your stay properly, we recommend checking the detailed timetables in the official programme, as activities may be subject to change.
Traditional festival food
Gastronomy is one of the fair's major attractions, allowing visitors to sample the most representative products of the Sierra de Cádiz. During the days of the celebration, visitors can visit the artisanal and local produce market, which features around twenty stalls, to try specialties linked to the livestock sector. The main dishes that stand out in the culinary offering are:
- Tastings of Payoya breed kid goat (cabrito de raza payoya).
- Tastings of Grazalema Merino breed lamb (cordero de raza merina de Grazalema).
Visitor guide and where to stay
The fair is located at the Llano de la Huerta, a venue that hosts both the livestock exhibition and the artisanal market. To facilitate access during the busiest days, it is recommended to park your vehicle outside the town centre, as traffic through the streets may be restricted.
To organise your stay with peace of mind, keep the following tips in mind:
- It is advisable to book your accommodation in advance, either in Benaocaz or in nearby towns, to comfortably follow the scheduled events.
- Using public transport is a preferable option for getting around during the long weekend.
- Before planning your visit, check the official programme to verify any possible changes in the timetables or locations of the events.
