Introduction and local significance
Holy Week in Villarrubia de los Ojos is a celebration declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest in Castilla-La Mancha. This year's edition will take place from 27 March to 5 April 2026. This festivity stands out as a benchmark in the province of Ciudad Real, allowing visitors to experience firsthand rites and traditions that keep the area's cultural heritage alive.
Historical origins and tradition
This commemoration spans over four centuries of history, reflecting a deep-rooted religious tradition in the town. The structure of Holy Week in Villarrubia de los Ojos is organised around its brotherhoods: the Real Hermandad de la Soledad, de la Vera-Cruz y de San Cristóbal, known as "Los Blancos" (The Whites) since 1614; the Hermandad de Jesús Nazareno y Santo Cristo en la Agonía, called "Los Moraos" (The Purples); and the Hermandad de Jesús en el Descendimiento y María Santísima de la Esperanza, named "Los Verdes" (The Greens) due to the colour of their hoods.
The festivity features distinctive elements and unique figures. Among them, the Soledades or amortajadas (shrouded women) stand out—women who take part in the Good Friday procession wearing a white dress, black mantle and traditional face covering (rostrillo), often barefoot to fulfil vows. Likewise, the Paso de los siete santos (Float of the Seven Saints) is the central sculptural group of the Hermandad de Jesús en el Descendimiento.
Programme and main events
The events of Holy Week focus on the procession parades and liturgical acts coordinated by the confraternities. A particularly significant moment occurs between the early hours of Maundy Thursday and dawn on Good Friday, when the so-called "Encuentros" (Encounters) take place, where floats from different brotherhoods converge at specific points. To check the exact departure times, detailed routes and any updates, it is necessary to consult the official programme, as events are subject to change.
Traditional festival food
The gastronomy of Villarrubia de los Ojos is part of the traditional cuisine of the province of Ciudad Real. Local establishments offer diverse options based on the region's culinary offerings. Although there are no dishes specifically and exclusively linked to the events of this celebration in the available documentation, visitors can enjoy the area's typical cuisine in the town.
Visitor guide and where to stay
To make it easier to follow the processions, it is advisable to stay in the town itself or in nearby localities, booking in advance due to high demand on these dates. During peak times, it is preferable to use public transport or park outside the centre to avoid traffic restrictions. Before travelling, it is wise to check the official schedule to stay informed about timetables, access and any potential changes to the events.
