Introduction and local significance
Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Arcos de la Frontera is celebrated this year from 29 March to 5 April 2026 in this municipality in the province of Cádiz, in Andalusia. This festivity holds the official recognition of Festival of Autonomous Tourist Interest and attracts the interest of visitors and devotees. The religious celebration has been linked to the town for four centuries, a period in which popular devotion was historically combined with various charitable works. The streets of the historic quarter become the main stage for the processional parades organised by local brotherhoods. This religious event combines the town's architectural heritage with a deep-rooted cofrade (brotherhood) tradition that mobilises locals and visitors every spring.
Historical origins and tradition
The tradition of the parade of Armaos and Romanos, known as the Onzuria, dates back to the 18th century and involves various local and invited groups. This parade prominently features the Armaos from the Brotherhoods of San Antonio, Nazareno, and Veracruz, as well as the Romanitos of Cristo Rey from La Borriquita, alongside groups from other provinces. Among the local brotherhoods, the Vera Cruz stands out, founded in the 15th century and considered one of the oldest of the Arcos Holy Week. As an urban testimony to these roots, the municipality features the Monumento de los Nazarenos (Monument to the Nazarenes), a structure made of stone and wrought iron representing three Nazarenes carrying the guide cross next to a round pedestal with the insignias of the brotherhoods. Likewise, the celebration of the Resurrection of the Nazarene is commemorated through a popular bullfighting festivity that includes the release of fighting bulls in the streets.

Traditional festival food
The traditional gastronomy of the Sierra de Cádiz and Arcos de la Frontera holds a prominent place during the festive days of spring. In the pastry section, pestiños (sweet honey-glazed pastries) and pastries made by the Mercedarian Nuns stand out, as well as the bollo de Semana Santa or bollo de Arcos, a traditional ring-shaped bun with a probably Muslim origin. Among the savoury and spoon dishes, alboronía (a vegetable stew made with pumpkin, tomato and chickpeas) and abajao (a traditional leftover soup containing bread, wild asparagus, vegetables and egg) stand out. Ajo molinero is also made, a simple recipe based on bread, garlic, tomato and spices, alongside Andalusian gazpacho (cold vegetable soup) and payoya goat cheese coated in wheat. Heartier stews include berza jerezana (a rich stew combining pork, bacon, blood sausage, chickpeas and vegetables such as Swiss chard or cardoon thistles) and honey lamb, characterised by its juiciness and the sweet touch of the region.
Visitor guide and where to stay
To follow the events of Semana Santa in Arcos de la Frontera with comfort, it is recommended to take guided tours that allow visitors to appreciate the cofrade legacy and the most important points along the processional routes. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance to secure a place both in the municipality itself and in nearby towns, which facilitates travel for evening events. During the days of highest public turnout and processions, it is preferable to use public transport or park vehicles outside the central area. Given that all schedules and routes are indicative, it is advisable to consult the official organisation of the event beforehand to confirm any changes in the scheduled events.
