Introduction and local significance
The Semana Grande de Bilbao in Bilbao is the landmark festive event during the summer period in the province of Bizkaia, within the Basque Country autonomous community. During this edition, with official dates running from 21-29 August 2027, the city hosts numerous cultural offerings. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance for the festival dates; staying in the municipality itself or in nearby towns is a very useful option to make following the night-time events easier.
Historical origins and tradition
In 1978, various Bilbao associations organised a ideas competition with the aim of creating a 'Semana Grande' (Big Week), thus responding to the lack of relevant events in the city during the summer. After more than 40 years of celebrating the Aste Nagusia, the festival has an unmistakable icon. This is Marijaia, the character who symbolises the festivities, who solemnly appears on the balcony of the Teatro Arriaga at the beginning of the celebration and is consumed by flames through the burning in the Plaza del Teatro Arriaga when the festivities conclude.
Programme and main events
The official programme for this edition includes key events such as the chupinazo (opening rocket launch) and the reading of the pregón (opening proclamation), accompanied by the much-awaited appearance of Marijaia on the balcony of the Teatro Arriaga. In addition, the programme includes more than 100 free musical performances, with the main venues being the Abandoibarra and Parque Europa areas. The end of the events is marked by the traditional burning of Marijaia in the Plaza del Teatro Arriaga. Before travelling, it is essential to check the official programme, as times and events may be subject to change.
Traditional festival food
The available official documentation does not record any specific recipes or traditional dishes exclusively linked to the calendar of this festival in the territory of Bizkaia. Despite this, the municipality's hospitality establishments offer the opportunity to taste the local cuisine and gastronomy during the days the event takes place.
Visitor guide and where to stay
The area around the Teatro Arriaga acts as the nerve centre for the main events that make up the official programme in the municipality. For travel during days with the highest attendance, it is preferable to choose to use public transport or to opt for parking outside the city centre. Likewise, it is advisable to carefully review institutional notices to stay up-to-date with any logistical variations that may arise.
