Introduction and local significance
La Noite dos Calacús in Pontevedra is officially celebrated on 31 October 2026. This festival revives Galician traditions linked to Samaín and All Souls' Day in the municipality of Pontevedra. This edition moves its main venues to the Casa da Luz, the arcades of A Ferraría and Calle Conde de San Román, and is dedicated to women suffering from gender-based violence and the victims of this same scourge.
Historical origins and tradition
This celebration is directly rooted in the ancestral customs of Galicia surrounding All Saints' Day and the feast of the dead. Among the traditional elements recovered are the making of chestnut necklaces, pan de ánimas (souls' bread) and the use of decorated pumpkins. The most prominent component of the tradition is the revival of aesthetics and parades inspired by the Santa Compaña.
Programme and main events
The central day includes children's and family workshops, scary storytelling sessions with the show Garavanciño e A Noite dos Calacús, and a pumpkin carving workshop in the arcades of A Ferraría. The hospitality industry in the historic centre participates with specific decoration and ambient music in the squares. The main event is the Procesión das Ánimas, for which attendees are invited to dress in white or as souls.
Traditional festival food
During the celebration, traditional products of the autumn season and the All Souls' festivity in Galicia stand out. Among the gastronomic elements specific to the event are chestnuts, used both in workshops to make necklaces and in the popular preparations of the date. Likewise, the traditional making of pan de ánimas is part of the local customs during the scheduled activities.
