Introduction and local significance

The Mercado Medieval in Alcalá de Henares, officially known as the Mercado Cervantino, takes place from 8 to 12 October 2026 as part of the Semana Cervantina. The event transforms the historic centre of this Madrid municipality across more than two kilometres of stalls laid out along calle Mayor, calle Cardenal Cisneros, plaza de Cervantes, plaza de San Diego, plaza de los Santos Niños, and Huerta del Obispo. Welcoming around 300,000 visitors each year, this celebration holds the designation of Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional.

Historical origins and tradition

The festivities transport the town back to the 16th century to commemorate the figure of Miguel de Cervantes, whose baptism was recorded in the town on 9 October 1547. The streets of the historic quarter serve as a natural stage for historical reenactments inspired by the Cervantine universe, with Don Quixote as the central character. Visitors can encounter street parades, troubadours, musicians, fantastical characters, and period encampments that recreate traditional life from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Programme and main events

This edition's official programme features more than five hundred cultural and entertainment activities combining theatre, dance, parades, craft workshops, and falconry displays. Highlights among the events include the following:

  • 9 October: Civic Procession of the Baptismal Certificate of Cervantes (Procesión Cívica de la Partida de Bautismo de Cervantes).
  • 10 October at 17:30: Knights' Tournament and Medieval Jousts (Torneo de Caballeros y Justas Medievales) at the palenque, featuring four knights, four squires, four horses, two dancers, and a count acting as master of ceremonies.

Traditional festival food

The stalls set up along the route offer a varied selection of food and artisanal products. Visitors can purchase a range of food at the stalls scattered across the grounds or bring their own food and drink. This dining offer forms part of the stroll through the market, allowing travellers to eat in the open air while taking in the wandering street performances.

Visitor guide and where to stay

It is advisable to book accommodation well in advance in the town itself or in nearby localities to make accessing the events of the Mercado Medieval in Alcalá de Henares as easy as possible. On the busiest days, the organisers recommend using public transport or leaving your vehicle in car parks located outside the historic centre. It is practical to walk under the arcades to move more smoothly between stalls, and to check official channels before your visit to confirm performance times.
