Introduction and local significance
The Mercado Medieval de Elche (Elche Medieval Market) is being held this year from 5 to 8 November 2026 as part of the programme for the XXXI Festival Medieval d’Elx. This edition comes with a change to its usual route due to construction work in the Plaza del Congreso Eucarístico, so the activity is moving to the Plaça de Baix, the adjacent streets, and the Glorieta. Over four days, this space in the historic centre of Elche hosts around a hundred craft and food stalls, open continuously from 10:00 to 23:00.
Historical origins and tradition
The celebration of this market is part of the autumn cultural programme linked to the Misteri d’Elx cycle, under the theme Terra Regnum. During the event, ancient trades are recreated through demonstrations of traditional work such as blacksmiths, bakers, carpenters, and spinners. These displays of period crafts and trades allow visitors to learn about traditional guild work in the streets of the old town of Elche.
Programme and main events
The official opening of the Mercado Medieval de Elche will take place on Thursday 5 November at 18:00 in the designated area. The official programme includes children's theatre activities, storytelling, live music, parades, and continuous entertainment throughout the four days. To check the detailed schedules of the performances and shows planned for each of the squares and streets along the route, you can check the official programme for this edition.
Traditional festival food
The market has a varied offer of gastronomic products distributed among the stalls set up along the route. Visitors can find artisanal creations and typical products from the medieval era and traditional gastronomy to enjoy while strolling around the venue.
Visitor guide and where to stay
The market venue is located in the Plaça de Baix, the Glorieta, and the adjacent streets in the historic centre of Elche. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance for the festival dates, either in the town itself or in nearby locations, which makes it easier to follow the evening events. On days with higher visitor numbers, it is preferable to use public transport or park outside the centre, and it is advisable to check the official town council website before travelling in case of any changes to access.
