Introduction and local significance
The Jornadas del Queso en Munilla are a gastronomic celebration that takes place in the municipality of Munilla, in La Rioja. This event focuses on the promotion and tasting of cheeses of various varieties and origins. The current edition is scheduled from 24 to 25 October 2026. This festival is worth visiting for the opportunity to discover and taste a wide range of cheeses, as well as for the chance to interact directly with the producers participating in the fair.
Historical origins and tradition
The Jornadas del Queso were born from the initiative of a local cheese dairy that organised tastings. Over time, the event has evolved and now welcomes numerous producers who present and sell their creations. Since its inception, the event has grown significantly, going from having four or five cheese dairies to the twenty planned for this year.
The fair allows visitors to discover cheeses from different origins, including goat cheese specialties, blue cheeses, Cabrales and Manchego. Attendees can taste, smell and compare the characteristics of the cheeses directly at the stalls. This interaction not only enriches the experience, but also promotes knowledge about the different varieties and production methods used in each region.
Programme and main events
The programme of the Jornadas del Queso en Munilla will take place at the Frontón Municipal, where visitors can enjoy a series of activities. On Saturday 24 October, the day begins at 16:00 with the opening of the cheese exhibition and sale, which will run until 21:00. On Sunday 25, the activity resumes at 10:00 with the second opening of the exhibition, ending at 15:00. These events are essential to enjoy the variety of cheeses presented, and allow direct contact with the producers, who share their passion for the art of cheese-making.
Furthermore, this fair offers the possibility of tasting artisan cheeses and learning about their production. Attendees can interact with the cheese-makers, who explain the characteristics of their products, adding educational value to the experience.
Traditional festival food
The gastronomy at the Jornadas del Queso en Munilla stands out for its focus on cheese, with Queso Camerano (a traditional goat and sheep's milk cheese from La Rioja) being one of the main protagonists. This cheese, typical of La Rioja, is made with sheep's and goat's milk and is especially valued during the festivity. Attendees have the opportunity to taste it and appreciate its characteristic flavour in different forms, whether on its own, in tapas or accompanied by other local products.
In addition to Queso Camerano, visitors will find a variety of cheeses from different regions, allowing them to explore the cheese diversity of all of Spain. Goat cheeses, blue cheeses and Cabrales will also be present, offering attendees a complete experience of flavours and textures.
Visitor guide and where to stay
The Jornadas del Queso are held at the Frontón Municipal in Munilla. It is advisable to use public transport or park on the outskirts, as an influx of between 6,000 and 6,500 visitors is expected, which can complicate access and parking. Parking may prove more difficult than usual, so it is advisable to be prepared to park a little further away.
For those planning to attend, it is suggested to book accommodation in advance. Staying in the municipality itself or in nearby towns facilitates access to evening events. On the busiest days, it is preferable to opt for public transport. Before travelling, it is advisable to consult the official programme, as schedules and events may be subject to change. It is advised to bear in mind that many cheese fans are willing to put up with minor inconveniences to enjoy the fair, which means that prior planning is key to enjoying this experience.
