Introduction and local significance
The FLORA International Festival of Flowers in Córdoba is a cultural event focused on contemporary botanical art that takes place in the capital of Córdoba from 12 to 22 October 2026. This event brings together international botanical creators who showcase large-scale works in monumental sites across the city. The project is jointly promoted by Zizai Cultura and the City Council of Córdoba.
In its 2026 edition, the ninth in its history, the theme revolves around the motto and concept of the "Ephemeral." The proposal allows visitors to explore emblematic historical courtyards that host the competing installations, combining Andalusian architectural heritage with the forefront of international floral design.
Historical origins and tradition
The competition held its first edition between 20 and 29 October 2017. The origin of the initiative dates back to 2015, following a visit to the city by Jiangping Fu, president of Zizai Hotels, who agreed with the City Council of Córdoba to organise an artistic competition inspired by the architecture and vegetation of traditional Córdoba courtyards.
Among its unique customs is the artistic reinterpretation of courtyards through ephemeral botanical installations evaluated by a jury. Additionally, as a closing event of the festival, the so-called "Guerrilla FLORA" takes place, a collective action where florists and civic entities reuse and recycle leftover plant material from the works to create new installations in public spaces. The programme also includes the Velá de las Flores, organised by the Youth Delegation, which features a parade with the Santa Cruz band, the proclamation of the Queen of Flowers, and the Young Art Market.
Programme and main events
The official agenda of the FLORA International Festival of Flowers in Córdoba includes training workshops, lectures, guided tours, and participatory actions spread throughout the historic centre. For detailed information on each day's schedule and registrations, the complete list is available in the event's main page.
Among the most notable events is the opening of the exhibition of competing installations on 16 October at 11:00, located in the Diputación de Córdoba, the Palacio de Viana, the Palacio de Orive, the Archaeological Museum, and the Patio de los Naranjos of the Mezquita-Catedral. On the same day, the First and Second FLORA Prizes will be awarded to the selected artists. In the musical section, the concert "La flor cantada" performed by Martirio and Jesús Lavilla will take place on 17 October at the Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía (C3A), while the IV Velá de las Flores will be held on 18 October at the Paseo de la Victoria. Finally, on 22 October at 16:00, the floral recycling action "Guerrilla FLORA + Sadeco" will take place in the Jardines del Huerto de Orive.
Traditional festival food
Staying at the festival offers the opportunity to taste traditional culinary creations from Córdoba's gastronomy in local taverns and restaurants:
- Flamenquín cordobés: a roll made with pork loin filled with serrano ham and cheese, breaded and fried, typically served with fries or salad.
- Rabo de toro: a slowly cooked beef stew made with red wine and spices until it reaches a tender texture.
- Mazamorra: a traditional cold cream made with crushed bread, ground almonds, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, and vinegar, usually served with grapes.
- Ajo blanco: a cold soup made from bread, ground almonds, garlic, and olive oil.
- Gazpacho: a cold blended soup made from tomatoes, cucumber, pepper, garlic, and extra virgin olive oil.
- Berza cordobesa: a spoon dish made of chickpeas stewed with cabbage, blood sausage, chorizo, and bacon.
- Pastel cordobés: a sweet pastry made of baked puff pastry filled with angel hair, sweet potato, and almonds, dusted with icing sugar on top.
- Vinos de Montilla-Moriles: generous wines protected by this local designation of origin, ideal for gastronomic pairing.
Visitor guide and where to stay
The artistic works are distributed across courtyards and monuments such as the Patio de los Naranjos of the Mezquita-Catedral, the Palacio de Viana, the Provincial Diputación of Córdoba, the Palacio de Orive, and the Archaeological Museum. The municipal bus company Aucorsa is among the official collaborators of the festival and facilitates urban transport between the different heritage venues. On days of high attendance, it is advisable to use public transport or park the vehicle in areas outside the urban centre.
Access to the competing floral installations is free and open continuously from 11:00 to 20:00, from Friday 16 to Wednesday 21 October. Certain programme proposals, such as guided tours of the installations and specialised workshops, require prior registration through the official portal www.festivalflora.com. The venues are equipped with ramps and inclined planes to facilitate independent wheelchair access, and activities marked with the accessibility pictogram have the option for interpretation in Spanish Sign Language (LSE) upon request via email to inclusion.actividades@ayuncordoba.es or inclusivosydiversosilse@gmail.com.
For accommodation, it is advisable to book in advance for the festival dates. Staying in the municipality of Córdoba or nearby towns allows easy access to evening shows and events. As the scheduling of times and activities may change at the last minute, it is wise to check the programme before attending the events.
