Introduction and local significance
The Fira de les Bruixes en San Felíu Saserra takes place from 31 October to 1 November 2026 in this municipality in the Lluçanès region, in the province of Barcelona. The event recalls and commemorates the women of the area who were persecuted and tried under accusations of witchcraft during the 17th century. The streets and squares of the old town host theatrical performances, dance and market stalls, spanning two days dedicated to raising awareness of these historical episodes.
Historical origins and tradition
The origin of the fair dates back to the year 2000, when it began to be organised to rescue the memory of the judicial proceedings carried out in the municipality between 1618 and 1648. During that period, 23 women were prosecuted on charges of witchcraft by ordinary civil justice, six of whom ended up executed by hanging. The traditional events and street scenes are not conceived as a celebration of the punishments, but as a tribute to the victims. The local residents play characters linked to the fears, superstitions and neighbourhood conflicts of the era, recreating the social climate that led to denunciations before the courts.
Programme and main events
The programme kicks off on the night of 31 October with the Fes-ta Bruixa, a nocturnal celebration that leads into the main day of 1 November. This day concentrates the bulk of the fair, distributing market stalls, roaming theatre scenes and historical dances throughout the old town. These events, which include performances and musical acts, take place at various points in the old town.
Traditional festival food
The municipality of San Felíu Saserra is located in a rural setting where economic activity is divided between agriculture, livestock farming and industry. In the surrounding areas, made up of pine, holm oak and oak forests, it is common to find wild mushrooms, products that form part of the natural environment of the town.
Visitor guide and where to stay
The activities of the Fira de les Bruixes en San Felíu Saserra take place on foot in spaces such as the Plaza Mayor and Calle Balmes, around the Romanesque church of Sant Feliu. As the events are held outdoors in narrow stone streets, it is advisable to park vehicles outside the historic centre or use public transport during peak traffic times. To follow the nocturnal activities of 31 October and the daytime fair, it is best to book accommodation in advance, either within the municipality or in neighbouring villages in the rural surroundings. Before travelling, it is recommended to consult the official programme for any possible changes to street performances.
