Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas y Feria en honor a la Virgen de Riánsares in Tarancón form the central event in the annual calendar of this Cuenca municipality. This edition takes place from 7 to 13 September 2026, dedicating these days to the patron saint with a programme that combines religious acts and popular celebrations. A visit to the town during these days allows visitors to experience first-hand how Marian traditions integrate with fairground activities, offering an ideal opportunity to observe the local heritage in full festive spirit.

Historical origins and tradition

The identity of the Fiestas y Feria en honor a la Virgen de Riánsares in Tarancón is built upon rituals safeguarded by the Hermandad de la Virgen, the brotherhood responsible for marking the official start by launching the Chupinazo rocket. The festival's calendar stands out for the Ofrenda de Flores (flower offering), an act where attendees traditionally bring red carnations to craft the mantle for the image of the saint. During these celebrations, it is common to see locals dressed in the traditional taranconera or taranconero costume, or wearing the mantilla or traditional peña club outfits, depending on the event's protocol. Another unique element of local tradition is the release of the Torillos de Fuego (fire bulls), a pyrotechnic display carried out exclusively by accredited personnel recognised as Expert Consumers to guarantee safety. At the end of the galopeo parade, it is a popular custom to dance the Jota Manchega in the Plaza de la Constitución.

Programme and main events

The programme is structured around various events that mark the rhythm of the festival. Highlights among the core acts include the official opening speech (Pregón de las Fiestas 2026), delivered this year by Concepción Zarco Pérez on 29 August, followed by the sash ceremony for the Court of Honour. During the main days, 8 September concentrates the most significant religious events, including the flower offering and the solemn procession of the image of Nuestra Señora de Riánsares. The float and troupe parade and competition also take centre stage, alongside firework displays that illuminate the sky at specific milestones of the week. Full timetable details and exact locations for all these events can be checked in the official programme provided in the listing above.

Traditional festival food

Gastronomy plays a fundamental role during the fair days, centred around collective tastings held in public spaces.

  • Migas manchegas: A popular free aperitif (fried breadcrumb dish with pork delicacies) offered to attendees on 10 September.
  • Guisos Típicos: The main dish of the popular public tasting, reaching its 39th edition on 9 September at the Paraje del Caño.
  • Limonada popular: A traditional wine and fruit punch drink served after the neighbourhood wake-up parade (diana).

Visitor guide and where to stay

To enjoy these festivities, the main hub is located at the Recinto Ferial (fairground). Due to the large crowds the event attracts, it is advisable to use public transport or find parking outside the busiest part of the town centre before walking over. Regarding the marquee zone logistics, note that on 6 September closing time is set for 05:00, while from 7 to 13 September opening hours extend until 07:00.

The organisation has introduced the "Tarancón inclusivo" initiative, establishing noise-free fairground hours: on 7 and 8 September from 20:00 to 21:30, and on 9 September from 20:00 to 21:00. Additionally, remember that bringing alcohol into the Centro Escénico venue is strictly prohibited. It is recommended to book accommodation well in advance, whether in the town itself or in nearby villages, which will make attending the evening events much easier. Before travelling, it is wise to verify the official programme, as events and times may be subject to change by the organisers.
