Historical origins and tradition

Santo Domingo de Guzmán, whose full name was Domingo de Guzmán Garcés, was born in Caleruega in 1170 into a deeply religious and highly esteemed family. His parents were Don Félix de Guzmán and Doña Juana de Aza, relatives of the kings of Castile, León, Aragon, Navarre and Portugal, and direct descendants of the founding counts of Castile. This Spanish religious figure and Catholic saint founded the Order of Preachers, whose members are known as Dominicans. He died in Bologna on 6 August 1221 and was canonised in 1234 by Pope Gregory IX. In addition to his connection with Doñinos de Salamanca, he is the patron saint of the province of Burgos, Campaspero, Navas del Madroño, astronomers, scientists and the Dominican Republic, as well as being the creator of the Holy Rosary.
