Introduction and local significance

The Zalea Patron Saint Festivities in Pizarra are officially held from 10 to 24 May 2026. This festive event is dedicated to the local patron saints, San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza, combining religious devotion with the cultural and social revitalisation of this hamlet in Málaga, within the autonomous community of Andalusia. The programme unfolds over several weeks to offer both locals and visitors a varied schedule of traditional, musical and community events on the street.

Historical origins and tradition

In recent years, the festivities in honour of San Isidro have usually been structured around 15 May, lasting for two weekends to maximise citizen participation. The traditional starting signal includes the ringing of bells and the firing of rockets that announce the beginning of the festive period. One of the highlights of the start is the departure of the ox carts from the Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. De la Paz heading towards the Arroyo de Casarabonela esplanade, where the passage of San Isidro's cart is accompanied by the sound of the traditional drum. Following popular games and the election of Miss and Mister Romería (Pilgrimage), the entourage begins its return to the village.

The day of 15 May concentrates the most devotional acts with a traditional morning rocket launch and the street beautification contest, which encourages residents to decorate their facades. In the afternoon, Holy Mass in honour of the Patron Saints is celebrated in the Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. De la Paz, followed by the solemn procession through the streets of Zalea to the rhythm of the La Lira music band. These local customs reaffirm the agrarian and community identity of the festivity.

Programme and main events

The calendar of events ranges from liturgical acts to popular open-air dances and children's events spread over several key days. Among the most attended moments are the opening of the Fairgrounds, the afternoon tea tribute to the elderly with the election of the Fair's Grandmother and Grandfather, and the gala events for the election of children's and youth queens, ladies and gentlemen. The nights prolong the activity with concerts by groups such as Long Play and Kike y Manu, performances by orchestras like Rompeolas, local dance academy shows and various DJ sessions. The final stretch of the festive cycle includes the daytime fair, flamenco fashion shows and a fireworks display that marks the official closing. To check the detailed schedules for each day, it is recommended to review the official programme displayed on the festivity's information sheet.

Traditional festival food

The culinary offering of the festivities focuses on popular tasting moments shared at the venue and in the streets of the municipality.

  • Paella: Popular tasting of this traditional Spanish rice dish offered to all attendees during the daytime fair.
  • Helados (Ice creams): Special distribution of ice cream focused on the youngest children of the municipality during the children's programme on the penultimate day of celebrations.

Visitor guide and where to stay

The main events are distributed between the Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. De la Paz, the surroundings of the Arroyo de Casarabonela for the pilgrimage and the Fairgrounds for the musical performances and the daytime fair. It is advisable to book accommodation well in advance in the municipality of Pizarra itself or in surrounding towns to comfortably follow both the daytime events and the night-time dances. During the days of highest public turnout, it is preferable to use public transport or park vehicles outside the most central areas to avoid traffic jams at the access points. Likewise, it is useful to check the official schedules before making any trip, as the programme may undergo last-minute changes.
