Introduction and local significance

The Patron Saint Festivities in Honour of San Isidro and the Stmo. Cristo de la Flagelación in Belmonte de Tajo are officially celebrated from 15 to 17 May 2026. This festive event brings together the inhabitants and visitors of this town in the Madrid region around its two patron figures through a full calendar of religious and festive events. The event stands out for keeping alive centuries-old customs combined with leisure and gastronomic gatherings in different parts of the town centre.

Historical origins and tradition

Religious rituals form the core of local tradition, notably the processional transfers of San Isidro Labrador between his hermitage and the parish church, where the traditional blessing of the fields takes place. Meanwhile, the novena in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de la Flagelación includes the solemn handover of the staff to the new Head Brother (Hermano Mayor) during its services. The traditional programme also includes the procession of the image of Christ accompanied by the Villarejo de Salvanés Music Band, with the singing of the hymn, the blessing and the devout kiss. Among the leisure customs, the Chita Competition (a traditional game of throwing metal pieces at a target) in both men's and women's categories stands out, alongside the famous Subida a la Plaza (Climb to the Square) from Puerta de Valencia to the rhythm of the "Los Alcoranes" brass band.

Programme and main events

Although the core of the celebration takes place on the official dates, the festive atmosphere kicks off days before with events as varied as the 4th "Holi" Festival, the charity matinee in aid of the Peña Taurina Belmonte de Tajo in Plaza de la Constitución, or the 3rd Stew Competition. 14 May hosts the musical storytelling show "Dibidibadidibu" at the Parish Theatre as a prelude to the chupinazo (rocket-launching opening) and the official proclamation delivered by the Head Brother of Christ, followed by the presentation of the children's Queen and Ladies-in-Waiting. The nights are completed by music dances featuring the "Adicción" Orchestra, macro-discotecas with DJ Víctor Estecha, and the musical tribute "Partiendo la pana" dedicated to Estopa and Melendi, alongside sessions by DJs César Novero and Ismael Durán. The bullfighting section gathers the release of young bulls in the bullring, children's running of the bulls with oxen, and the third edition of the leisure event "La cagada del manso", closing the cycle with the "West Park" children's playground and the final firecracker string (traca) after the procession on 17 May.

Traditional festival food

The traditional cuisine of these days features deeply rooted recipes and products that are shared in the streets and squares of the municipality.

  • Limonada y bollos (traditional lemonade and sweet buns): Institutional courtesy offered by the Farmers' Association and the Head Brother immediately after the celebration of the main masses.
  • Caldereta de magro con tomate (lean pork stew with tomato): Popular dish enjoyed collectively in Plaza de la Constitución, the proceeds from donations of which go entirely towards the restoration of the image of San Isidro Labrador.

Visitor guide and where to stay

To guarantee the smooth running of the Patron Saint Festivities in Honour of San Isidro and the Stmo. Similar parking prohibition measures affect Calle Barrio Alto, Calle Carrera Honda, Calle Palacio, Calle Cristo, Calle Marqués de España and Calle Norte during specific time slots over the weekend.
