Introduction and local significance

The Patron Saint Festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Socorro in Argamasilla de Calatrava take place this year from 4 to 9 September 2026. Official events formally begin on 3 September with a community penitential service at the Parish Church of la Visitación de Nuestra Señora, followed by a concert by the local musical band at Parque Huerta Asaura. This festival brings together locals and visitors for a programme full of cultural, religious and leisure events organised at various locations in this municipality in the province of Ciudad Real. It is advisable to plan your visit in advance and check the official timetables so you do not miss any of the activities that liven up the town during these days.

Historical origins and tradition

Festive rituals have popular religiosity as their main axis, notably the triumphal entry of the Virgen del Socorro into the local streets every 7 September. The day includes the transfer of the Brotherhood of the Virgin from the Parish Church to the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Socorro, followed by Holy Mass at the sanctuary itself. This moment is followed by a massive welcome for the patron saint in Plaza del Ayuntamiento, with a welcoming speech delivered by Dª María Ángeles Osorio Gijón from the municipal balconies. The religious calendar is completed with the floral offering on 8 September, the solemn mass in honour of the patron saint and the subsequent procession of the image through the streets. Likewise, the agenda includes deeply rooted traditions such as the Tribute to the Absent Son, organised by the Housewife Association.

Programme and main events

The official programme ranges from the festive rocket launch and ribbon-cutting ceremony to the opening speech delivered by D. Francisco Javier Segura Castellanos. The nights feature major musical events at Parque Huerta Asaura, where Orquesta Nueva Versalles, Orquesta Rockset, Medina Azahara, Sergio Contreras and the youth party with Crazy Fuck perform. Mornings and afternoons are enlivened by morning vermouth dances in Plaza del Ayuntamiento with orchestras such as Bámbola and Jenasan, as well as daily children's activities on Calle Enrique Ferrándiz and afternoon DJ sessions at the fairgrounds. The celebrations conclude on 9 September with a water park and foam party in Plaza Palacios, the youth afternoon session with an aerial smoke show and the final firecracker display in Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

Traditional festival food

Traditional Manchegan cuisine takes absolute centre stage at the Cultural Centre through popular tastings scheduled during the festive days, where locals and visitors share traditional recipes.

  • Migas manchegas (Traditional dish made with crumbled bread and local products): Traditional preparation based on crumbled bread and local products, which is tasted publicly at the Cultural Centre on 5 September.
  • Gachas manchegas (Typical dish made with bitter vetch flour): Typical dish made with bitter vetch flour that forms part of the popular tastings organised at the Cultural Centre on the 6th.
  • Tiznao (Traditional roasted fish recipe with vegetables): Traditional roasted fish recipe with vegetables that can be tasted at the Cultural Centre on 7 September.
  • Pisto manchego (Traditional Manchegan vegetable stew): Prepared by the Housewife Association on 8 September as part of the Tribute to the Absent Son.

Visitor guide and where to stay

For travel during the days of highest attendance at the Patron Saint Festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Socorro in Argamasilla de Calatrava, it is advisable to use public transport or park your vehicle outside the town centre. As an inclusive measure promoted by the organisation, the fairgrounds remain noise-free between 22:00 and 23:00 to facilitate rest and participation for adults and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is wise to book accommodation in advance, either in the municipality itself or in nearby towns, and to check official programme updates beforehand to coordinate travel to the different festive venues.
