Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas Patronales in Aldea del Rey, in the province of Ciudad Real, form the central pillar of the local festive calendar. The 2026 edition officially takes place from 4 to 8 September, a period during which the town's activity centres on paying tribute to its two patron figures: the Virgen del Valle and the Santísimo Cristo del Consuelo. Visiting the town during these dates offers an insight into a cultural and religious programme that defines the identity of this La Mancha community. In addition to the main days, the municipality schedules events for later in the month, specifically on 14 September, dedicated to the Santísimo Cristo del Consuelo, extending the festive spirit beyond the core week.

Historical origins and tradition

The intangible heritage of these festivities is rooted in religious rites and trade traditions. The Novena to the Virgen del Valle is a deeply ingrained custom consisting of nine prior days of prayer, during which locals gather to sing the Himno a la Virgen, setting the spiritual tone for the celebrations. Alongside this, the Fiesta de las Encajeras stands out, an event celebrating the art of bobbin lace making. This celebration includes exhibitions showcasing intricate lace pieces, practical workshops for those wishing to learn the technique, and an official awards ceremony honouring lace makers who have distinguished themselves through their craft.

On a social level, the Concentración de Peñas (gathering of festive clubs) has become a key element of the Fiestas Patronales in Aldea del Rey. Held continuously since 1997, this activity serves as the primary vehicle for community cohesion. Through this gathering, local peñas actively participate in the festivities, sharing communal spaces and traditional food that reinforce the sense of belonging within the Aldean community.

Programme and main events

The official 2026 programme brings together a series of events combining religious tradition with entertainment. The festive period opens with the Pregón inaugural (opening speech), followed by the proclamation ceremony of the Reina and Damas (Festival Queen and Ladies of Honour). Religious services lie at the heart of the celebration, featuring the Ofrenda Floral (flower offering) to the Virgen del Valle at her chapel, the subsequent solemn Mass, and the evening procession, which attracts some of the largest crowds. The schedule for 4 to 8 September concludes with a fireworks display.

It is worth noting that, once these central events have concluded, the calendar includes a specific day of celebrations on 14 September. This day features a morning religious service in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Consuelo, followed by an evening procession. Specific timings and exact locations for each event can be consulted in the official programme at the top of this page to help plan your visit.

Traditional festival food

The food associated with these festivities is closely linked to open-air gatherings and peña meetings. The items consumed during these dates are simple, local, and intended to be shared among participants:

  • Limonada: A traditional punch-like drink made with wine and fruit prepared for these dates, commonly served during the Concentración de Peñas.
  • Frutos secos: Nuts and dried fruit typically offered at peña gatherings, acting as the classic snack during hours of socialising.

Visitor guide and where to stay

The Recinto Ferial (fairgrounds) on Calle Castilla is the main hub of activity. To facilitate traffic flow and access, specific road measures are put in place: from 18:00 on 4 September until 8 September, Calle Real, Calle Santo, Calle Calzada, Calle Obispo Piñera and Calle Salvador will remain closed to motor traffic. Likewise, vehicles will not be permitted in Plaza de España throughout the fair period. As an additional measure, Calle Oriente will operate two-way traffic from the corner of Travesía Ramón y Cajal up to Calle Fábrica. Visitors must comply with all signage installed by local authorities and maintenance staff.

For accommodation and logistics, it is advisable to book early, either within the municipality itself or in nearby towns, making it easier to attend the evening events. Given the expected crowds, using public transport or parking vehicles outside the town centre before entering the festival area is recommended. You are advised to check the official programme regularly, as event schedules and activities may be subject to organizational changes.
