Introduction and local significance
Las Fiestas Patronales de Santa Úrsula are celebrated in the Tenerife municipality of Santa Úrsula from 15 to 25 October 2026. This event pays homage to Santa Úrsula Mártir, patron saint and honorary and perpetual mayor of the locality, and to Nuestra Señora del Rosario, co-patron of the parish. Marian devotion has a documented presence in the church since 1626, with four centuries of history being commemorated in this edition. The events combine the religious aspect with an intense cultural, sporting and festive programme that attracts numerous visitors to the Recinto Festero on avenida de Las Palmeras and the municipal square.
Historical origins and tradition
The festivity combines religious fervour with popular tradition through events deeply rooted in the municipality. Devotion to the Virgen del Rosario dates back to 1626, while the Queen Election Gala was held for the first time in 1956, when Cándida Rosa Hernández Hernández was crowned as the first queen at the municipal Cinema-Theatre. With the growth of the event, the contest moved to the Terrero de lucha José Álvarez Gutiérrez and the Pabellón Fernando Luis González, reaching sixty years of reigns in 2016 with a historical exhibition of costumes, photographs, sashes and crowns of the winners. The oldest preserved festival programme dates back to 1962, with Don Jorge Hernández Rodríguez as parish priest and Don Domingo Gutiérrez García as mayor. In that year of 1962, the celebrations already included brass band meetings, Canarian wrestling championships, parades of giants and big-heads, and solemn Eucharists. Among current customs, the decoration of streets with flags and ornaments stands out, along with floral arrangements and the preparation of the images in the parish church, the ringing of bells and the firing of firecrackers to announce the big day of 21 October. The queen candidates represent the different neighbourhoods of the municipality, and other events held include the First Lady Election Gala, the folkloric offering to Santa Úrsula and the Virgen del Rosario in front of the church, the traditional float parade along Carretera España, the Gregorio «El Volquete» Canarian Wrestling Tournament and the traditional football match between bachelors and married men.
Programme and main events
The official programme runs from 15 to 25 October 2026 with cultural, sports and religious events spread across different parts of the municipality. Among the most prominent highlights are the official opening and reading of the proclamation by Alexis Santana in front of the portico of the Parroquia de Santa Úrsula, the Grand Queen Election Gala at the Recinto Festero on avenida de Las Palmeras, and the traditional float parade along Carretera España. Other highlights include the 12th Gregorio «El Volquete» Canarian Wrestling Tournament, the solemn processions of the patron saint and the Virgen del Rosario with pyrotechnic displays, and the concert by David Bustamante. Consult the complete details of schedules and locations in the official programme in the file.
Traditional festival food
Traditional cuisine plays a prominent role in the celebration with hearty dishes and local products that reflect the island's culinary richness. Among the most representative preparations is carne de fiesta (marinated and fried pork pieces), as well as puchero canario, a very complete traditional stew made with meats and vegetables. Standing out among the popular dishes are the shared neighbourhood paella in the square during the festive day of 21 October and the dessert contest held on the same day in the municipal square following prior registration at the Fiestas department. To accompany these recipes, the municipality is part of the Tacoronte-Acentejo designation of origin, standing out for its artisanal cheeses and renowned local red wines.
