Introduction and local significance
The Fiestas Patronales of Els Poblets are celebrated this year from 26 July to 8 August 2026 in this municipality in the province of Alicante, within the Valencian Community. This festivity combines deep religious devotion to the Divino Salvador and the Virgen del Rosario with a wide range of popular events organised by the local council, the quintas (groups of people born in the same year) and local peñas (social clubs). The official programme encompasses everything from musical concerts and large-scale parades to sports competitions and gastronomic gatherings that bring together locals and visitors in the streets, squares and municipal venues.
Historical origins and tradition
Among the most deeply rooted traditions of the celebration is the traditional entrada de la murta (arrival of the myrtle), a festive event animated by the Unión Musical de Els Poblets (UMEP) and the Xaranga Garranxa. The religious and cultural rituals feature notable participation from local entities, such as the Muixeranga de Segària, which accompanies the solemn floral offering to the Virgen del Rosario. The festive calendar also includes the traditional collection and subsequent distribution of blessed bread in honour of the Divino Salvador. Likewise, the morning despertà (wakeup call) led by the filaes (Moors and Christian troupes) sets the festive rhythm for the central days.
Programme and main events
The official programme spans two weeks packed with cultural, recreational and festive proposals starting with the UMEP festive music concert in Plaza del Salvador. Among the most anticipated moments are the festival opening speech, the chupinazo (rocket-launching start) and the traditional paella night held on Calle Girona. The days progress with diverse events such as musical vermouths in Miraflor park, the great pilota valenciana (traditional Valencian handball) match on Calle Sant Josep, the Moors and Christians parade, the water park at the municipal swimming pool, and the grand float parade. The festive finale is provided by the correfoc (fire run) at the Mira-Rosa multi-use building, the procession in honour of the Divino Salvador, and the fireworks display.
Traditional festival food
- Salmuera: Traditional salted fish product usually distributed during popular sobaquillo dinners (informal dinners where everyone brings their own food).
- Coca María: Typical local sponge cake that is part of the shared gastronomic offering in the streets.
- Sandía: Fresh watermelon served to accompany neighbourhood gatherings and outdoor dinners.
- Mistela: Traditional sweet liqueur very present at tables during festive celebrations.
- Horchata: Refreshing tiger nut drink offered to participants at the end of the correfoc at the Mira-Rosa multi-use building.
Visitor guide and where to stay
It is advisable to book accommodation in advance to secure a place during these dates, either in the municipality itself or in nearby towns that facilitate rest after nighttime events. On days with the highest turnout, it is preferable to opt for walking or parking outside the central core to avoid crowds. It is important to bear in mind that some specific events require prior arrangements; for example, registration for the ribbon race must be done at the Town Hall from 23 to 30 July, and peñas can reserve tables for sobaquillo dinners at the Tourist Office. Similarly, participants in the Moors and Christians despertà must have the corresponding permit, and registrations for the float parade are managed at the town hall until 2 August. Before setting off, always check the official programme, as schedules and events may undergo last-minute changes.
