Introduction and local significance

Las Fiestas Patronales de Cehegín, held in honour of the Virgen de las Maravillas, officially take place from 8 to 14 September 2026 in this municipality in the Region of Murcia. The celebrations feature prior events starting in late August, bringing together locals and visitors around their most deeply rooted traditions.

Historical origins and tradition

Among the traditional elements of the Fiestas Patronales de Cehegín, the putting of the festival scarf on the Gigantes y Cabezudos (Giants and Big-Heads) stands out, along with the symbolic handover of the key. These characters parade accompanied by the Sociedad Musical de Cehegín and the Tío de la Pita, following the route from the Plaza del Castillo to the Plaza del Alpargatero. The programme also includes the specific celebration of the Día de los Huertanos (Orchard Workers' Day).

Programme and main events

Highlights of the festive calendar include the official opening proclamation and coronation in the Plaza del Castillo, theatrical performances at the Centro Cultural Adolfo Suárez, and the processional transfers of the Patron Saint between the Convento de San Esteban and the Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena. Attendees can also enjoy a concert by Diana Navarro alongside the Sociedad Musical de Cehegín in the Patio del Convento and a bullfight with bulls from Victorino Martín. The timetable for each day can be consulted in the official programme of the Fiestas Patronales de Cehegín.

Traditional festival food

During the festivities, the preparation of migas (breadcrumbs made with flour, pork, and garlic) stands out, taking on a special prominence during the 2026 Migas Competition, in which the various barracas (festival marquees) set up in the fairground participate.

Visitor guide and where to stay

To attend events at the barracas fairground, it is recommended to use public transport or park outside the centre on the busiest days. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance, either in the municipality itself or in nearby towns, which makes it easier to follow the night events. It is recommended to check the official programme beforehand for any possible changes in the times or locations of events.
