Introduction and local significance
The festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora de Orito in Monforte del Cid will officially take place from 30 August to 8 September 2026. This patronal festival brings locals and visitors together for religious and festive events centered around the Santuario Ntra. Sra. de Orito y San Pascual. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance for these dates and check the official programme for schedule changes before travelling.
Historical origins and tradition
This edition commemorates 40 years since the introduction of the opening festival proclamation (pregón). Among the most deeply rooted traditions are the admission of young children (infantas e infantes) of the Virgen de Orito and the torchlight procession starting from the Ermita de la Aparición. The musical section features a joint performance of the Pasodoble Orito, with music by D. Luis Molina Millá and lyrics by D. Gabriel Seguí Martínez, performed by the Sociedad Musical La Lira de Monforte del Cid and the Coral Monfortina. At the end of the main events, the traditional veneration of the image of the Virgin takes place.
Programme and main events
The official programme runs from the 2026 Festival Proclamation to the solemn procession on 8 September. Central events include the grand mascletà (daytime firework display), the concert by S.M. La Lira de Monforte del Cid and the Coral Monfortina, and the torchlight procession. Musical highlights also include an evening with Raphael and a performance by the Orquesta Athenas. For detailed timetables of each day, please consult the complete list in the official festival programme.
Traditional festival food
The gastronomic offer includes specialities closely linked to local and regional traditions. During the daily sessions, typical drinks known as palomas (an anise-based drink) and canarios (a local refreshing drink) are served, produced by Destilerías Monforte del Cid and Destilerías Limiñana y Botella, often accompanied by xanxullo, an original regional tapa created by local master xanxullero Agustín García from Novelda. At the popular hot chocolate gathering, Pepito de Aspe (local sweet pastries) are served, and attendees are requested to bring their own cup and spoon to reduce plastic use. The programme also features a giant paella prepared by Familia Riquelme, Arte y Arroz, and a charity community dinner for which a contribution of one kilo of non-perishable food per person is required, destined for Cáritas de Monforte del Cid.
Visitor guide and where to stay
Events are mainly concentrated around the Santuario Ntra. Sra. de Orito y San Pascual. On days with the highest attendance, it is best to use public transport or leave your vehicle outside the most crowded areas. Staying in the town itself or in nearby villages makes it easier to follow both daytime and evening events. It is recommended to plan your travel in advance and follow the logistical instructions to access the areas set up around the sanctuary square.
