Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas in honour of the Santa Cruz in Cadrete are celebrated this 2026 from 30 April to 3 May. These days, classified as Patron Saint Festivities, offer a space for social gathering and participation for both locals and visitors to this municipality in the province of Zaragoza, in the autonomous community of Aragon. The central objective of these dates is to offer a calendar of activities that integrates cultural, recreational and religious aspects within the framework of the May long weekend.

The relevance of these celebrations allows visitors to discover the municipality's heritage firsthand. A significant fact for the historical context of this edition is the recent reopening of the parish altarpiece, which took place on 12 April 2026, an event that highlights local heritage. The programme designed for this year allows attendees to participate in a wide variety of events, consolidating the value of these dates as a moment of special attention in the locality's annual calendar.

Historical origins and tradition

The celebration of the Santa Cruz in Cadrete is an expression of the roots and history that have been passed down from generation to generation. The preservation of this legacy is manifested through specific rites that define the personality of the fiesta. A prominent example is the "Imposición de pañuelos" (Scarf tying ceremony), a custom dedicated to those born during the year 2025, integrating the new residents into the festive collective in a symbolic and participatory way.

The "Comparsa de Cabezudos de Cadrete" (Big-headed figures troupe of Cadrete) is another identity element of great tradition that parades through the streets of the municipality. There is a specific rule of behaviour in this troupe: during the peñas' route, members are strictly forbidden from using whips, which shows a commitment to safety and peaceful coexistence. In the realm of religious devotion, the "Misa Baturra" (traditional Aragonese mass) connects faith with the folkloric expressions typical of Aragon. Likewise, the "Maestras Chocolateras" (master chocolate makers) play a fundamental role in the fiesta; they are in charge of the artisanal preparation of the hot chocolate offered to all residents, an act that symbolizes community hospitality and generosity.

Programme and main events

The 2026 edition of the Fiestas in honour of the Santa Cruz in Cadrete features a complete agenda spread over four days. Events are concentrated in various spaces, notably Plaza Aragón and the Pabellón Municipal (Municipal Pavilion). The official programme, available for consultation, establishes that the formal start takes place on 30 April with the "Pregón y Chupinazo" (Opening speech and firecracker rocket), followed by the peñas' route and the popular dinner, a key event to gather attendees at the start of the fiesta.

Throughout the days, highlights include the "VIII Encuentro de Gigantes y Cabezudos" (8th Giants and Big-Headed Figures Gathering) held on 1 May, and the "Concursos de Ranchos y Sangrías" (Rancho stews and sangria competitions) scheduled for 2 May, where culinary skill and group participation mark the dynamics of the day. The grand finale of these fiestas takes place on 3 May with the "Procesión y Misa Baturra" (Procession and traditional Aragonese mass), followed by the "Traca Final de Fiestas" (Final firecracker string of the fiestas) at the Pabellón Municipal. It is recommended to check the official programme in the attached sheet before travelling, as schedules and events may be subject to change.

Traditional festival food

Gastronomy during the Fiestas in honour of the Santa Cruz in Cadrete is characterized by the importance of popular cuisine and the social nature of its preparations. Among the dishes and products that define these dates are:

  • Chocolate: Prepared artisanally by the Maestras Chocolateras, it is a traditional product distributed among attendees during the course of the fiesta.
  • Bocadillo de jamón serrano con tomate: This is the star dish of the popular dinner organized on 30 April, being an essential element for the first festive get-together.
  • Rancho: This recipe, a traditional stew, is the central focus of the popular competition taking place on 2 May.
  • Sangría: This drink is the usual companion to the rancho in the competition on 2 May, being a typical product of open-air popular celebrations.

Visitor guide and where to stay

The main venue where a large part of the activities is concentrated is Plaza Aragón. For correct logistical organization, it is necessary to bear in mind that the management of vouchers for dinners, the purchase of scarves and the distribution of wristbands for the mobile discos is carried out exclusively on 27, 28 and 29 April at the Centro Sociocultural (Socio-cultural Centre), from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00.

It is important to remember that if visitors have specific dietary needs, such as coeliac disease, they must inform staff when purchasing vouchers. For public safety reasons, the public sale of any type of firecrackers is prohibited. To facilitate access to the municipality, it is preferable to use public transport or park outside the urban centre on days with the highest influx. Finally, regarding accommodation, it is advisable to book in advance, either in Cadrete or in nearby towns, which allows for greater flexibility to follow the nocturnal events without complications.
