Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas del Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia in Quer, in the province of Guadalajara, are the patron saint celebrations of this town. For the 2026 edition, the events take place from 29 August to 6 September. This festivity is dedicated to the Cristo de la Misericordia, whose image has been one of the main devotional references for the local residents (known as seteros and seteras) for generations. Visiting Quer during these days allows you to observe how the population integrates its religious traditions with a calendar of leisure activities and social events.

Historical origins and tradition

Devotion to the Cristo de la Misericordia is an identity element that remains active through the Hermandad del Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia, which currently has 126 members. The image of the patron saint presides over the main altar of the church of Nuestra Señora la Blanca, where the faithful gather to pay tribute to him. This brotherhood is responsible for the care of the image and preserves the customs and rituals that define these patron saint festivities.

Among the standout rites, the descent of the Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia marks a moment of unity between the members and the faithful, who accompany the image in its descent. Afterwards, the traditional auction of the four arms of the andas (processional platform) and the ribbons takes place, a practice that symbolises the community's commitment to the custody of the Christ. In addition to the liturgical events, local tradition includes the organisation of traditional games in the Plaza Mayor, such as lanzamiento de güito (pit-launching), tira de la rana (frog game), vuelta chapista and egg throwing.

Programme and main events

The start of the fiestas is made official with the pregón (opening speech) and the chupinazo (festive rocket) from the Town Hall balcony, an event that marks the beginning of the week. In the religious sphere, highlights include the descent of the Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia, the Miserere service in the church of Nuestra Señora la Blanca and the subsequent High Mass with a floral offering. These solemn events are combined with the procession, which showcases the traditional organisation of the brotherhood.

For leisure and social gathering, the programme includes specific events such as the celebration of the Grand Prix and the 1st Soapbox Race in the Plaza Mayor. The conclusion of the fiestas arrives with the fireworks display. To check the schedule details and the precise location of each event, it is advisable to review the list of official events published at the top of this guide.

Traditional festival food

Gastronomic offerings during these days focus on popular cuisine and collective participation. The organised lunches and dinners allow you to sample traditional recipes in a spirit of fellowship. The notable dishes and preparations are:

  • Arroz (Rice): Main ingredient and star of the local 2nd Gastronomic Contest.
  • Huevos con patatas y pimientos (Eggs with potatoes and peppers): Menu served during the popular dinner held on 3 September.
  • Caldereta de ternera (Beef stew): Fundamental dish of the popular lunch taking place on 6 September.
  • Café de puchero (Traditional pot-brewed coffee): Prepared by the Association of Retirees and Pensioners for the final day of the fiestas.

To attend the popular meals, tickets cost 6 euros individually, although there is the option to purchase a 12-euro pass for the three days of dining. These must be arranged at the Town Hall until 1 September, with bank card payment accepted.

Visitor guide and where to stay

The main venue where much of the festive activity is concentrated is the Fairgrounds. Given the influx of people on the specified dates, visitors are recommended to plan their travel in advance. Whenever possible, it is preferable to use public transport or park the vehicle in peripheral areas outside the town centre to avoid access difficulties.

For accommodation, it is best to book well in advance, both in the town itself and in nearby localities, which makes it easier to follow the evening events without complications. Before attending any activity, it is advisable to check the official programme, as schedules or the order of events may be subject to change. Likewise, it should be borne in mind that, in the event of a high fire risk or adverse weather conditions, the fireworks display might be conditioned or cancelled for safety reasons.
