Introduction and local significance

Las Fiestas de Santa Teresa in Ávila are officially celebrated from 9 to 18 October 2026 in this capital of Castilla y León. This patronal festival brings together residents and visitors around an extensive cultural, sporting, and festive programme organised to honour the figure of the city's patron saint. It is a notable occasion to tour the municipality and enjoy its institutional and recreational events in a monumental setting of great historical relevance.

Historical origins and tradition

Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada was born in Ávila in 1515 and died in Alba de Tormes in 1582, being known worldwide as Teresa de Jesús and locally as Teresa de Ávila. A mystic, Doctor of the Church, and reformer of the Carmelite Order, she was canonised in 1622 and her main feast day is commemorated every 15 October, the date of her death. Among the most deeply rooted traditional events are the reading of the Libro de las Fundaciones de Santa Teresa de Jesús (Book of the Foundations of Saint Teresa of Jesus) and the massive floral offering to the image of the saint in front of the Plaza de la Catedral. The streets also host the traditional parade of gigantones y cabezudos (giant figures and big-heads), as well as the solemn Eucharistic celebration and the procession of the image accompanied by the Virgen de la Caridad.

Programme and main events

The official programme of Las Fiestas de Santa Teresa in Ávila officially kicks off on 9 October 2026 with the gathering of peñas (social clubs) in Plazas de Italia and Nalvillos and the opening speech (pregón) in Plaza del Mercado Chico. Throughout the festive days, proposals as diverse as the National Canine Exhibition Ciudad de Ávila at the Polideportivo Manuel Sánchez Granado or the concerts scheduled at the Cubierta Multiusos and the Centro de Congresos y Exposiciones Lienzo Norte take place. Fans of sports and participatory activities also have dates such as the Santa Teresa Children's and Youth Fishing Trophy at the Fuentes Claras reservoir or the Ciudad de Ávila Urban Mile. To find out the exact times and locations of each event in detail, you can consult the complete list of the official programme available in this same informative section.

Traditional festival food

The culinary offer during these festive days revolves around the most emblematic products of the land of Ávila and its traditional recipes.

  • Chuletón de Ávila: A thick T-bone steak typical of Ávila's gastronomy.

Visitor guide and where to stay

The main venue for the events is located on the rear esplanade of the Centro de Congresos y Exposiciones Lienzo Norte. It should be noted that the historic centre is a set of pedestrian streets with access controlled by cameras, so parking inside is not permitted during the festive days. To park with ease, visitors have several outdoor and underground car parks available in the municipality:

  • Aparcamiento Lienzo Norte: Free space located next to the Congress Centre on Calle López Mezquita, beside the Local Police station.
  • Bus station and Avenida de Madrid: Surface areas enabled without parking meters in much of their surroundings.
  • Los Cuatro Postes: Surface parking area located on the Carretera de Salamanca.
  • Paseo del Rastro: Spaces available in the free parking sections.
  • El Grande underground car park: Located at Plaza de Santa Teresa s/n.
  • El Rastro underground car park: Located on Calle Beata Mª Teresa Jesús de Jornet s/n. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance, either in the municipality itself or in nearby towns, to facilitate access to the events and follow the nocturnal activities with total comfort. On the days with the largest influx of the public, it is preferable to use public transport or leave the vehicle parked outside the urban centre.
