Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas de San Sebastián in Níjar pay tribute to the patron and protector of this Almerian town every January. For this edition, the confirmed official date is set for 20 January 2027, when the urban area commemorates its historical connection with the figure of the martyr.

The celebration combines acts of devotion with popular gatherings focused on the craftsmanship and folklore of the municipality. During these days, the town showcases the roots of its customs through displays of traditional trades such as pottery, the making of jarapas (woven rugs), and esparto work. The involvement of the locals is evident both in the religious celebrations and in the communal gatherings around nijareña cuisine.

Historical origins and tradition

The patronage of San Sebastián over the town dates back to 1488, a date recorded in the documentation preserved in the Parish of the Annunciation. The veneration of the saint gained significant momentum during the campaigns led by Don Juan de Austria in the 16th century to subdue the rebellious Moriscos. Due to his marked devotion to the Roman martyr, the military leader placed various towns under his patronage as his troops passed through.

The image that is paraded today comes from the Christian art workshops in Olot and was acquired in the early 1940s, after the original statue was destroyed during the Civil War. To safeguard the heritage of the co-patron, the parish stewardship — an organ created in 2019 by priest José Rodríguez Bonilla and composed of four men and four women — entrusted its restoration to sculptor Joaquín Gilabert López in November 2021. Among the institutional honours, the Town Hall grants the saint a staff of office, confirming him as the honorary and perpetual mayor of the locality.

The popular manifestations involve the participation of the Cultural Association of Las Refajonas and its children's group, who perform native dances with rondalla, such as the fandango de Níjar, la Reja, and la Patrona de Almería. During the festivities, the Symphonic Band of the Cultural Association Níjar (ACN) plays the anthem dedicated to the patron figure.

Programme and main events

The celebration features a detailed calendar that attendees can review in the official programme located at the top of this sheet. Notably, the solemn votive procession through the streets of the old town stands out, where bearers carry the restored image to the rhythm of music played by the ACN Symphonic Band.

Another of the most representative moments of the Fiestas de San Sebastián in Níjar is the traditional blessing of roscos (ring-shaped pastries) and the distribution of popular migas (bread crumbs) at the El Granero venue, which gathers locals after the morning liturgies. The programme also includes the Gala de San Sebastián and the traditional nijareña gastronomy contest, which tests historical recipes from the municipality. To conclude the festive days, a fireworks display is launched simultaneously from the municipal car park of Nicanor and the tower of La Atalaya, completing the cultural agenda with the San Sebastián Concert at the Centre for Performing Arts.

Traditional festival food

The nijareña recipe book plays a crucial role during the festival, incorporating community dishes and plates presented at the annual traditional cooking contest held at the Municipal Tent. Among the highlights of these days are:

  • Roscos: traditional pastries that are taken to the temple to receive a blessing in honour of the patron saint.
  • Buñuelos con chocolate: sweet preparation distributed as a popular breakfast in the Plaza de la Glorieta after the morning bell ringing and as an afternoon snack during the fireworks shows.
  • Papas al Ajillo: classic dish made with seasoned potatoes that competes in the town's gastronomy contest.
  • Andrajos: soupy stew with sheets of flour dough, common in the winter culinary contest.
  • Caracoles en Salsa: spoon dish seasoned and presented as a showcase of local cuisine during the festivities.
  • Trigo: traditional stew prepared with this cereal and meats, made for the nijareña contest.
  • Berza: classic potage of legumes and vegetables typical of the local contests.
  • Papas a lo Pobre con Huevos de Codorniz: variant of fried potatoes cooked slowly with vegetables, prepared in the municipal tent for the contest.
  • Gurullo con conejo: representative dish of the municipality made with artisanal pasta shaped like cereal grains.
  • Soplillos: nijareña pastry sweet made with almonds.
  • Roscos de vino: baked pastry specialty made with wine, characteristic of the local baking tradition.

Visitor guide and where to stay

Public events and gastronomic gatherings primarily take place in the Municipal Tent and in central squares such as the Glorieta. For travellers arriving by car, the municipality has the municipal car park of Nicanor, although it is worth noting that this same space hosts chocolate tastings and the launching of festive fireworks.

It is advisable to check the official programme in advance in case there are changes in the order or timings of activities. During peak times, it is preferable to use public transport or leave the vehicle parked outside the urban centre to avoid the narrow streets of the historic town. Booking accommodation in advance is essential to secure a place during these winter dates, with a practical option being to stay in the town of Níjar itself or in nearby villages for easy access to evening and night events.
