Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas de San Rafael in Hellín (Albacete) are officially celebrated from 23 to 25 October 2026. This patronal festival turns the old town into the epicentre of municipal activity, combining cultural, musical and religious events. The festival stands out for high levels of participation from local citizens and associations.

Historical origins and tradition

The celebration in honour of the patron saint has become an unmissable date for reinforcing the municipality's identity. The events combine religious devotion with the revitalisation of historical spaces in the urban centre. Traditional elements include musical parades and the accompaniment of local groups during the processions of the image.

Programme and main events

The official programme of the Fiestas de San Rafael in Hellín includes the following highlights:

  • Friday 23 October: Opening of the Medieval Fair and opening speech delivered by singer Carmen Valero on the Town Hall balcony, followed by a concert by The Gafapasta on Calle El Rabal.
  • Saturday 24 October: Solemn concelebrated mass in honour of San Rafael at the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. Tasting of the traditional ajo de matazón (traditional pork slaughter garlic stew) in Plaza de San Rafael and procession of the patron saint's image to his chapel. Performance by Orquesta Panorama with their Time Tour 2026 show at the fairgrounds.
  • Sunday 25 October: San Rafael Choral Gathering and the 38th Ciudad de Hellín National Half Marathon alongside the "Hellín, Ciudad del Tambor" MTB race.

Traditional festival food

Gastronomy plays a leading role during the festivities thanks to the second edition of the Ruta de Tobías, a culinary route promoted by brotherhoods and the San Rafael Neighbourhood Association. Along this gastronomic trail, which runs through eight taverns and pubs in the old town, visitors can enjoy tapas accompanied by a drink for four euros. Culinary highlights include creations such as Milagro de Tobías, Capricho celestial, Pilato, Dulce Amargura, Capirote del Perdón, Gorritaco, Verdadero Icono and El Vasito del Patrón. Additionally, on Saturday there is a popular public tasting of the traditional ajo de matazón in Plaza de San Rafael.

Visitor guide and where to stay

To enjoy the festivities in comfort, it is advisable to book accommodation in advance either within the municipality or in nearby towns, making it easier to attend evening events. On days with the highest visitor numbers, it is best to use public transport or park outside the central areas to avoid traffic congestion. It is recommended to check the official programme beforehand, as schedules and events may be subject to last-minute changes.
