Introduction and local significance
The Fiestas de San Rafael in Córdoba are one of the most deeply rooted days in the Córdoba calendar, dedicated to honouring its Archangel Guardian. Although it is popularly associated with the protective functions of the city, the official patron is the Virgen de la Fuensanta, with San Rafael holding the status of historical guardian since the Middle Ages.
In the edition set for 24 October 2026, Córdoba celebrates its local festivity centred around a dual dimension that combines ecclesiastical reflection with a popular manifestation of community. The date, which this year falls on a Saturday, moves the school holiday to Monday 26 October, bringing together both devotees in the historic temples and families and groups around traditional outdoor culinary gatherings.
Historical origins and tradition
The origin of the devotion to Rafael dates back to the epidemic that struck the city in 1578. According to local tradition, on 7 May of that year, the archangel appeared to the priest Andrés de las Roelas, proclaiming the phrase: "I swear to you by Jesus Christ crucified that I am Rafael, whom God has appointed as guardian of this city." The end of the plague prompted civil and religious gratitude, transforming the archangel into an everlasting protective symbol.
From that event, Córdoba began to erect commemorative monuments known as "Triunfos" in its most representative locations. Among them, the Triunfo de San Rafael at the Puerta del Puente stands out, initiated in 1765 and completed in 1781 under the direction of the French sculptor Miguel de Verdiguier, joining other landmarks located at the Puente Romano, Plaza del Potro, and Plaza de la Compañía.
Between 1796 and 1806, the current Church of the Juramento was built, designed by the architect Vicente López Cardera, which holds the rank of minor basilica and serves as the canonical seat of the brotherhood. Although the reform of the Church's liturgical calendar unified the festivities of the archangels on 29 September in 1970, Córdoba maintains its own festival on 24 October by historical privilege.
The rituals include services organised by the Hermandad de San Rafael, which celebrates a solemn triduum on the three days prior at 20:00 and the Solemn Function of Rule. Throughout the festive day, the people of Córdoba visit the Church of the Juramento to pray, offer flowers, and parade before the main altar. Simultaneously, the civil tradition dictates going out to the countryside or open spaces to prepare a communal lunch.
Programme and main events
The official programme of the Fiestas de San Rafael in Córdoba outlines a series of events organised by civil institutions, the Hermandad de San Rafael, and the Federation of Cordoban Peñas, whose detailed schedules and itineraries can be consulted in the upper section of this article.
Among the most significant events is the institutional proclamation in honour of the archangel at the Visitor Reception Centre (CRV), delivered in this edition by Andrés Lorite as a prelude to the festivities. The core of the main day is centred on 24 October at the Church of the Juramento with the solemn morning votive mass, presided over by Bishop Jesús Fernández. The peñas complement the calendar with community gatherings ranging from the day of coexistence in Plaza de las Setas to the ceremony at the Círculo de la Amistad for the presentation of the Potros de Oro, Plata, and Bronce awards, where the highest institutional distinction is awarded to the Down Córdoba association.
Traditional festival food
The culinary component of this festival revolves exclusively around the outdoor lunch, featuring a central dish and its traditional accompaniments:
- Perol: A rice stew cooked outdoors in a pan or deep pot placed directly over the fire. It is usually prepared with pork, chicken, or rabbit, seasoned with a sauté of vegetables and various spices.
- Aliño de naranja con bacalao: A cold salad that combines flakes of salted fish with orange segments and olives, typically served as an appetizer or side dish to the perol.
- Vino de Montilla-Moriles: A wine from the Cordoban designation of origin that is an essential drink to pair with and accompany the dishes throughout the outdoor day.
Visitor guide and where to stay
Visitors coming to the city should note that the celebrations do not have a fairground or booths, as the focus of the day lies in the temples and the countryside. The religious nerve centre is the Church of the Juramento de San Rafael, located on Calle Juramento, which keeps its doors open throughout the day on 24 October, allowing free access for devotional visits.
For the culinary celebration, the population usually gathers in open-air spaces such as the peri-urban park of Los Villares, Parque Cruz Conde, La Asomadilla, the banks of the Guadalquivir River, as well as in private gardens, patios, and rooftops. It is essential for those wishing to light a fire for cooking to check in advance on the municipal portal cordoba.es for the authorised areas, as fire is prohibited in the mountains during high fire risk situations, and alternative sites such as El Arenal are made available.
To plan your stay, it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance given the dates of the festival. During the busiest days, it is preferable to use public transport or leave your vehicle parked outside the urban centre to walk to the Church of the Juramento and the historical Triunfos. Staying in the municipality itself or in nearby towns facilitates participation in the scheduled events, and it is recommended to check the timings of the official acts before embarking on any travel.
