Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas de San Juan Bautista in Venta de Baños are officially called for this edition on 11 June 2026. This patronal celebration in the province of Palencia is recognised as a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest within the autonomous community of Castilla y León.

Historical origins and tradition

The festivities of the Fiestas de San Juan Bautista in Venta de Baños have their core in Baños de Cerrato, a locality belonging to the municipality, where the Mozarabic rite has been performed at the church of San Juan de Baños since 1974. This liturgical initiative began with Bishop Anastasio Granados García and has enjoyed the collaboration of figures and institutions such as the Primate Cardinal of Spain Marcelo González Martín, the Mozarabic Chapel of the Cathedral of Toledo, and the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro de León. During the days of the celebration, residents dress in period costumes and decorate the village with coats of arms made of colourful fabrics that they have crafted themselves.

Programme and main events

The official programme includes the lighting of the bonfire on the 24th at 00:00 with the intention of purifying through fire. A medieval market is set up in the vicinity of the Visigothic basilica of San Juan Bautista. As the detailed official programme appears in the file above, it is recommended to consult it to see the updated schedules for each event.

Traditional festival food

On St. John's Day, after the vermú (a traditional midday drink and snack time) at the peñas (local social clubs), a large paella is cooked and then distributed in portions to attendees, both locals and visitors. Likewise, various food products can be purchased at the medieval market:

  • Traditional sweets
  • Produce from nearby vegetable gardens
  • Foodstuffs from other areas of the province of Palencia
  • Leather and ceramic handicrafts

Visitor guide and where to stay

It is advisable to book accommodation in advance for the festival dates, either in the municipality itself or in nearby towns, which makes it easier to follow the night-time events. On the busiest days, it is preferable to use public transport or park outside the centre to avoid traffic jams. Before travelling, it is recommended to check for possible changes to the official schedules as indicated in the general guidelines.
