Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas de Orce in honour of the Patron Saint Nuestra Señora la Virgen de los Dolores are officially held from 12 to 15 August 2026, although the programme includes numerous preliminary events from the beginning of the month. This municipality in the province of Granada, nestled in Andalusia, combines religious devotion with cultural and leisure events in locations such as Plaza Nueva and Paseo de los Caños. This edition also coincides with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the important archaeological and palaeontological sites of Orce, an added incentive to visit the town.

Historical origins and tradition

The celebrations of this Granada municipality integrate deeply rooted customs that have been preserved over the years. Among the traditional events, the Encuentro de Cuadrillas stands out, featuring performances by groups such as the Cuadrilla de Animeros de Almaciles and the Cuadrilla de Ánimas y Escuela de Baile de Orce. Additionally, during the festive period, the traditional bicycle ribbon race and a specific ribbon exhibition are scheduled in the Town Hall Plenary Hall. The recovery of customs linked to other local festivities is also promoted, such as the consumption of traditional Cuerva (a traditional alcoholic punch) and Colación (traditional sweets and nuts) of San Antón and San Sebastián.

Programme and main events

Given that the official programme ranges from cultural and sporting activities to nightly street dances, the offerings cater to various interests across several areas of the town. Highlights include the opening proclamation by Don Leandro Torres Alchapar accompanied by a flamenco troupe in Plaza de la Iglesia, the float and big-head parade, and the fun wacky soapbox race from Las Cuatro Esquinas to Los Cuatro Caños. In the religious section, the solemn mass and subsequent procession of the Patron Saint Nuestra Señora la Virgen de los Dolores on 15 August stand out, a day that concludes in the early hours with the final firecracker display (traca fin de fiestas). To find out the exact location and detailed schedules of each event, visitors can consult the official programme of the Fiestas de Orce available locally.

Traditional festival food

The traditional gastronomy of these festivities features Cuerva and Colación as one of its greatest exponents. This combination of drink and accompaniment is used to revive and promote the spirit of other celebrations in the local calendar, such as those of San Antón and San Sebastián. Visitors who come to the Fiestas de Orce can also enjoy the hospitality offerings concentrated around the midday fair set up in Paseo de los Caños during the main days of August.

Visitor guide and where to stay

To organise your visit successfully, it is worth bearing in mind that on the days with the highest turnout, it is preferable to park outside the town centre or use available transport, as access to the historic quarter may be restricted. Regarding local regulations, the fair music in Paseo de los Caños will stop promptly at 18:30 and close completely at 19:00. On the other hand, participants in the soapbox race must be of legal age or have parental authorisation, and the use of a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads is compulsory. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance in the town itself or in nearby localities to comfortably follow all the events.
