Introduction and local significance

The Fiestas de la Vendimia en Cheste combine agricultural tradition linked to grape harvesting with devotion to its patron, San Lucas Evangelista. For this edition, the festivities will take place from 15 to 18 October 2026 in this municipality in the province of Valencia.

The programme includes wine-related rituals, popular celebrations, and fireworks events spread across various points in the urban area. Highlights include offerings of must, traditional parades, and bullfighting events that engage local groups and residents around their local identity.

Historical origins and tradition

The origin of these celebrations lies in the homage that the municipality has paid to San Lucas Evangelista for many years, whose liturgical feast is commemorated every 18 October. Over the decades, the festival has structured its wine-related aspect to reach and celebrate its 50th edition with special commemorative events.

One of the central moments is the Pisada de la uva (Grape Treading), where the new must is extracted and offered to the patron saint. In a representative context, the festival features the presentation and proclamation of the Queen of the Vendimia and her Honour Court. The streets of the municipality are adorned to host unique parades such as the Day of the Mantón, with its corresponding parade, and the Day of the Flower, articulated through the Pasacalle de la Flor (Flower Parade).

The local bullfighting tradition holds significant weight through the drawing of entablaos and the celebration of modalities such as entràs (bull runs), the entries of bulls and horses, afternoons of heifer and bull in points, the toro embolao (bull with flaming balls), the toro de cuerda (bull on a rope), and the camperos (country bull runs). The patronal day begins with the general ringing of bells in the morning, a precursor to the solemn mass and procession along the usual route.

Programme and main events

The official programme includes cultural, bullfighting, and devotional events. Among the central acts are the country bull run starting from the area of Lomiquia, the musical session of the Vendimia Remember Fest in the plaza Falla Barrio de la Alegría, and the religious events on 18 October, which include the solemn mass with the Coral San Lucas Evangelista and the evening procession in honour of the patron. The fireworks section has its own space with the daytime mascletá in the plaza Doctor Cajal and the nighttime mascletá in the calle Manuel Azaña.

The complete details with all the schedules and locations of the Fiestas de la Vendimia en Cheste can be consulted in the official programme list located just above in this entry.

Traditional festival food

The gastronomic aspect of the celebrations is articulated through recipes shared in public spaces and pastry preparations:

  • Paellas: these are the central dish around which the popular Fiesta de las Paellas is organised, prepared outdoors by local groups.
  • Torrà popular: a community barbecue with grilled meat aimed at local groups, for which the town hall provides firewood and sand in designated areas.
  • Pastissets de San Dionís: traditional Valencian sweets that are part of cooking workshops scheduled for the dates coinciding with the festival of 9 October.

Visitor guide and where to stay

The festive events are distributed across locations such as the plaza de la Ermita, the Teatro Liceo, the plaza Doctor Cajal, the plaza Falla Barrio de la Alegría, and the area of Lomiquia. Groups interested in participating in the torrà popular must request materials (firewood, sand, tables, and chairs) in advance from the Cheste Town Hall, indicating the name of the group and the number of attendees.

On the busiest days, it is preferable to use public transport or leave the vehicle parked outside the urban area to avoid difficulties in passage. It is advisable to always check the official programme before starting the journey, as schedules or events may be subject to changes. When it comes to resting, booking in advance is recommended; staying within the municipality of Cheste or in nearby towns facilitates attendance at the scheduled shows and mascletás during the night.
