Introduction and local significance
The Fiesta de la Virgen de la Salud en Algemesí is officially celebrated from 7 to 8 September 2026 in this municipality in the Comunitat Valenciana. This patronal festival brings together residents and visitors for religious and cultural events dedicated to the local patron saint. Every year, the organisation of the festivities rotates among the festeros (festival organisers) from the four historic neighbourhoods of the town: Valencia, La Muntanya, Santa Bárbara and La Capella. This traditional organisational structure ensures the survival of festive customs in each edition.
Historical origins and tradition
The celebrations commemorate the discovery of the image of Nuestra Señora de la Salud in the area of Berca in 1247. The first documented records of the festival come from expense accounts regarding the cost of the festival in 1610, initiated by the residents of calle Berca. In 1680 the celebration evolved from a neighbourhood festival into a celebration for the entire municipality. Later, in 1747, the commemoration of the 5th centenary of the finding of the patron saint's image took place, and in 1816 the town council established her patronage for the entire locality.
The cultural heritage associated with the festival holds multiple official recognitions of great relevance. The festivity was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest on 22 February 1977 and a Valencian Wonder of cultural events and intangible heritage on 5 October 2008. On 2 July 2009 it was catalogued as one of the 10+2 Treasures of Spain's Intangible Cultural Heritage, and on 27 August 2010 it was declared an asset of cultural interest. International recognition was formalised on 28 November 2011 with its inclusion in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and it also received the cultural merit distinction from the Generalitat on 9 October 2012. Among its most prominent traditions are the participation of artistic groups such as the Muixeranga and ritual dances like els Bastonets or els Tornejants.
Programme and main events
Given that the official programme for this edition includes specific events such as the Processó de les Promeses, the Processoneta del Matí and the Processó de Volta General, it is recommended to check the specific schedules and details on the festival's own information sheet before attending the events. The main ceremonies are concentrated around the old town and the local basilica. The processional parades combine performances by traditional dance groups with human tower formations and the pyrotechnic elements characteristic of the night of 7 September. Before travelling, remember that schedules and events may change according to organisational guidelines.

It is advisable to check directly with venues in the town centre for the availability of menus and specialities during the patron saint days.
