Introduction and local significance

The Festes de Moros i Cristians en Fontanares are officially celebrated from 24 August to 1 September 2026. This patron saint festival organises its festive calendar with the active participation of local residents and comparsas (festival groups). Activities take place in compliance with municipal regulations established to ensure peaceful coexistence and rest for the neighborhood.

Historical origins and tradition

The celebrations of the Festes de Moros i Cristians en Fontanares keep alive the customs linked to the comparsas. Citizen participation is organised through these collectives, which have their own gathering venues where much of the festival life takes place. Municipal ordinances regulate traditions related to fireworks and background music in these shared spaces.

Programme and main events

As the detailed official programme can be consulted directly through the channels provided by the council, municipal regulations set out the general schedules for the events. Activities using children's and personal noise fireworks are scheduled from 24 to 27 August from 10:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 24:00. From 28 to 31 August, these hours are extended from 09:00 to 14:00 and 17:30 to 01:30, while on 1 September they are permitted from 09:00 to 14:00 and 17:30 to 22:00. Furthermore, background music inside and outside the comparsa venues has specific time slots set for each period of the festival week.

Traditional festival food

During the days of celebration in the town, activity in the comparsa premises revolves around meals and gatherings of the festival participants. Official notices and ordinances cover the shared use of these meeting spaces during the festive days. No specific traditional recipes are detailed in the official schedule for this edition.

Visitor guide and where to stay

To plan your visit properly, it is advisable to book accommodation in advance in the town itself or in nearby villages to follow the evening events comfortably. Given the influx of visitors, it is best to use public transport or park outside the town centre. Local regulations serve as a reminder of the absolute ban on lighting fires in forest areas and in the Zona d’Influència Forestal (Forest Influence Zone) located less than 500 metres away, in accordance with Decree 91/2023 of the Consell, expressly prohibiting the launching of coets (firecrackers) or lanterns outside authorised locations. Likewise, public cooperation is required regarding street cleanliness and compliance with current waste regulations, recalling that fines of up to €2,000 apply for anti-social behaviour under applicable law.
