Introduction and local significance
The Ferias en honor del Stmo. Cristo de la Caridad in Losar de la Vera are officially celebrated from 11 to 20 July 2026. This patron saint festival organised in this town in the province of Cáceres, Extremadura, brings together locals and visitors around the religious services dedicated to the venerated image. It is advisable to book accommodation well in advance for the festival dates due to the influx of visitors the town welcomes during these summer days. The town council's official website provides the necessary updates on the schedule of festivities that energise local life.
Historical origins and tradition
The traditional rites of these fiestas feature strong ethnographic elements, particularly during the main religious acts. In the morning, the procession is enlivened by the town's danzantes (traditional dancers), who dance before the Christ figure and throughout the various religious and traditional ceremonies. This dance troupe is composed of exactly twelve dancers, one musician in charge of playing the tabor pipe and drum (flauta y tambor), and the director, who carries the tambourine.
The dancers' costume consists of a white shirt, blue waistcoat, red trousers, red belt, and white espadrilles, with a red ribbon tied around their heads. The procession is traditionally followed by the misa extremeña (traditional Extremaduran mass) in honour of the patron saint. In the afternoon, tradition continues with the holding of the ofertorio (offertory) of traditional dishes. These offerings are carried out by the rosqueras, young girls from the town who attend the event dressed in striking traditional costumes.
Programme and main events
The official calendar of the Ferias en honor del Stmo. Cristo de la Caridad in Losar de la Vera spans ten days with cultural, sporting and religious activities. Among the main highlights are the subida del Cristo (the ascent of the Christ statue), the solemn mass, and the procession featuring the danzantes and rosqueras, as well as the traditional ofertorio in Plaza de España. The programme also includes outdoor activities such as the Las Charcas mountain bike (BTT) route starting from the municipal gym, aquatic fun at the Vadillo swimming pool with a foam party and bouncy water castles, and evening musical performances in Plaza de España by groups such as Alterius and El Niño de la Vera. Before travelling, visitors are advised to check the official programme, as schedules and events may be subject to change.
Traditional festival food
Traditional gastronomy plays a prominent role during the celebration through the recipes prepared by the brotherhood members and local residents. To discover the culinary creations typical of these dates, the offering includes:
- Platos típicos (traditional dishes): Traditional culinary preparations made specifically by the members of the brotherhood of Cristo de la Caridad and the residents of Losar de la Vera.
- Ofrendas gastronómicas (gastronomic offerings): Homemade recipes presented and offered collectively during the afternoon ofertorio held in Plaza de España. These preparations reflect the community's involvement in the festive events and are publicly displayed during the brotherhood's religious events.
Visitor guide and where to stay
To attend the various events, note that the main celebrations take place in venues such as the Ermita de Los Humilladeros, located on Calle Ronda Sur, and the Plaza de España. On peak days, public transport or parking outside the town centre is recommended to avoid traffic and parking difficulties. Staying within the town itself or in nearby villages makes it much easier to enjoy the evening events scheduled throughout the festivities.
