Introduction and local significance
The Feria y Fiestas de Guadix in Guadix (Granada) will take place this year from 29 August to 9 September 2026. This summer event combines popular celebrations with centuries-old traditions rooted throughout the town. It is well worth a visit for its extensive cultural, musical and bullfighting programme that enlivens the streets for just over a week. The events attract both residents and visitors looking to immerse themselves in the local customs of the municipality.
Historical origins and tradition
The celebration features one of the most unique festivals in Spain thanks to the emblematic Cascamorras run, declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest. During the festivities, the character participates carrying his traditional flag and accompanied by his drummer, marking the rhythm of local devotion and fervor. Likewise, the traditional pública (opening parade) of the fiestas stands out for the presence of giants and cabezudos (big-headed figures), parades and brass bands that tour the streets announcing the official start of the major festivities. Before his eagerly awaited journey to Baza, the character experiences his traditional farewell at the Compás de Santo Domingo, a deeply respected rite by locals and devotees alike.
Programme and main events
The official programme runs from late August until 9 September, highlighting key moments such as the inaugural proclamation, the switching-on of the decorative street lighting and star concerts at various points around the city. The musical offerings range from popular open-air dances hosted by orchestras at the Municipal marquee to performances in cultural spaces and emblematic squares such as Plaza de la Constitución or the Fundación Julio Visconti. Attendees can also enjoy theatre and zarzuela performances at the Teatro Mira de Amescua, mixed bullfights at the Plaza de Toros Caño de San Antón, medieval markets, float parades and end-of-fiesta street parades. The complete list of events, times and locations can be consulted in the official programme available in the information sheet.
Traditional festival food
- Jarra Accitana: a piece of craftsmanship made from typical clay from the hills of Guadix, deeply linked to local customs and the traditional pottery identity of the region. This ceramic work represents one of the most representative artisanal elements that can be admired and acquired during the fair days.
Visitor guide and where to stay
To enjoy the festivities without logistical setbacks, it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance, either in the municipality itself or in nearby towns that make it easy to follow the evening events. On days with the highest influx of crowds, it is preferable to opt for public transport or leave your vehicle parked outside the urban centre to avoid traffic jams. As an inclusive measure and sensory accessibility initiative, a noise-free hour is held every day at the fairground, specifically from 20:00 to 21:00. Tickets for theatrical shows can be purchased in advance at Librería Pipper, while tickets for specific concerts are available through the giglon.com platform and at local authorized sales points such as Papelería DTM, Papelería Pipper, El Bodegón and Calatrava. Before setting off, it is advisable to check for any updates to the official programme.
