Introduction and local significance
The Feria Real en Arjona is celebrated this year from 10 to 13 September 2026 in this municipality belonging to the province of Jaén, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. This event stands out in the local calendar as the only major festivity in the town that does not revolve around a religious invocation. Visitors who come during these dates can enjoy musical events and livestock parades.
Historical origins and tradition
The origins of the Feria Real en Arjona date back to 1792, when King Charles IV authorised the holding of a livestock fair in the municipality by royal decree. That royal provision initially set its duration at three days, specifically 14, 15 and 16 September each year. Prior to this official establishment, commercial transactions and livestock exchanges took place in the Plaza del Mercado—a space that today corresponds to the Paseo General Muñoz Cobo—traditionally coinciding with the feast of Corpus Christi. The need for a larger space and to comply with basic hygiene standards led to the relocation of the fair event to the San Diego area, then located on the outskirts of the town. Years later, specifically in 1894, the Paseo Nuevo or Paseo de la Feria was built, an infrastructure that permanently returned the celebration to the urban centre. Among the equestrian traditions linked to the festival are the horse parade, which brings together mules, horses and carriages, and the Concurso de Atalajes (Harness Competition), a contest that awards cash prizes of 80 euros in five different categories for male riders, female riders, couples riding pillion, children and horse-drawn carriages.
Programme and main events
The official programme of this edition brings together various recreational and musical events organised in the Caseta Municipal-Juventud, with live performances, children's days and daytime equestrian events. The events officially kick off with the traditional switching on of the lights in the Paseo de Andalucía and Calle San Diego, coinciding with the celebration of Children's Day, which offers reduced prices on the fairground attractions installed for the event. During the following days, the horse parade and the Harness Competition take place, in addition to the various concerts scheduled for the fair nights. It is recommended to check the complete list of times and locations in the official programme available on the festival's information sheet.
Traditional festival food
During the days of celebration at the fairgrounds, the drinks offering focuses on traditional local products. Among them, sweet wine stands out specifically, a traditional drink available for consumption at the various stalls set up throughout the fair. This product accompanies moments of rest and gathering among attendees while they enjoy the programmed events in the streets and marquees of the municipality.
Visitor guide and where to stay
To organise your visit to the festivities, it is very advisable to book accommodation well in advance for the dates of the festival. Staying in the municipality itself or in nearby towns greatly facilitates following the evening events without logistical complications. On days with the highest influx of the public, guidelines advise opting to use public transport or leaving your vehicle parked outside the urban centre to avoid traffic jams. Likewise, it is essential to check the official programme before travelling, as times and events may be subject to change.
