Introduction and local significance
The Feria en Córdoba is the most prominent event of the festive May in Córdoba and is celebrated this year from 22 to 29 May 2027. This vibrant and traditional festival fills the Andalusian capital, attracting visitors who wish to enjoy its popular culture. The inclusion of the keyword Feria en Córdoba allows us to identify this major event that transforms the municipality for just over a week.
Historical origins and tradition
The origin of this celebration dates back to 1284, when Sancho IV granted the city the privilege of holding two livestock fairs each year. That primitive market eventually settled in May and became closely linked to the devotion to Our Lady of Health, consolidating itself as one of the oldest fairs in Andalucía. Historical references place its main fair in the 18th century, maintaining deeply rooted traditional elements. Among its customs are the horse and carriage parades, the attire featuring the cordobés hat and combs, as well as the use of sevillanas. Since 1994, the event has moved from its former location in the gardens of La Victoria to its permanent site at El Arenal.
Programme and main events
The official programme of the Feria en Córdoba includes various traditional activities at the fairgrounds, although it is advisable to check the official timings for any possible changes. Attendees can enjoy the horse and carriage parades that traverse the grounds during the festive days. Additionally, the casetas provide an open celebration space where social and musical events are concentrated.
Traditional festival food
The culinary offerings during the fair revolve around very specific products and drinks that are consumed in the casetas and stalls at the venue. Notable is the vino fino, a typical Córdoba wine that is usually served in the casetas. The rebujito, made with vino fino mixed with lemonade and served in a plastic cup with ice, is also very popular. At the food stalls located outside the casetas, specialties such as boquerones fritos (fried anchovies) can be ordered.
Visitor guide and where to stay
The El Arenal venue is located next to the Guadalquivir River and offers various access and parking options. Two reserved and monitored parking areas are set up: one next to the Ciudad del Feriante, near the football stadium, and another free area behind the stadium designated for vehicles of people with disabilities holding a blue badge, accessed via Calle José Ramón García Fernández. There is also a public paid parking managed by the Barea group on the other side of the A-4 motorway, on the right side towards Madrid, with entry via the ramp to the Mercacórdoba roundabout and exit via Camino de la Barca. To avoid using private cars, the municipal bus company Aucorsa establishes a special service each year with adapted vehicles and 13 specific routes, among which lines 21, 23, and 29 are highlighted during the night.
Regarding accessibility and regulations at the venue, the casetas are freely accessible to the public, without the need for an invitation or membership, and must have an entrance ramp, a low bar section, and adapted restrooms. Additionally, on Calle del Potro, within El Arenal, there is a section with directional tactile paving for visually impaired individuals. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance for these dates and to use public transport on the busiest days.
