Introduction and local significance
La Feria de Benaocaz is held in the Cádiz municipality of Benaocaz, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, with official dates set for 9-12 October 2026. This event stands out notably for its firm commitment to the native breeds of the mountain range, a core focus that attracts livestock farmers and visitors interested in the traditional primary sector. During the days of celebration, the event brings together the national morphological competitions for the cabra payoya (Payoya goat) and the oveja merina grazalemeña (Grazalema Merino sheep). Likewise, the programme includes practical workshops on artisanal cheese making, public gastronomic tastings, a specialised market for local products, various thematic exhibitions, a photography competition and diverse musical proposals that complete the venue's offerings.
Historical origins and tradition
The municipality hosting La Feria de Benaocaz was originally founded by the Moors in 715 and remained under Islamic rule until its final reconquest by the Christians in 1485. In that very year of 1485, the locality was granted as a lordship to D. Rodrigo Ponce de León, who held the title of Duke of Cádiz. Due to its exceptional heritage and urban legacy, its entire old town is officially declared a Historic Site. Aside from the October livestock fair, the local festive calendar treasures deeply rooted traditions such as the festivities dedicated to San Blas, co-patron saint of the village, celebrated every 3 February and whose origins date back at least to the 17th century with a procession in which brass bands accompany the statue. The first Saturday of June marks the pilgrimage in honour of the patron saint San Esteban, which includes the transport of the saint by cart to the Agua Nueva area and the subsequent tasting of the traditional cuchipanda (traditional communal stew). Finally, on 15 August, in the context of the summer fair, the traditional release of a bull with ropes (toro enmaromado) takes place through the streets of the municipality.
Programme and main events
The official programme of La Feria de Benaocaz structures its days around livestock, cultural and leisure activities. The main events combine the technical aspect of the agricultural and livestock sector with proposals open to visitors coming to the Cádiz municipality during the month of October 2026.
- National morphological competitions for the cabra payoya and the oveja merina grazalemeña, evaluating specimens of both native breeds.
- Cheese-making workshops and an artisan product market located in the enabled venue.
- Thematic exhibitions and the development of the photography competition called for the occasion.
- A peculiar reveille (diana) featuring different animal species that tours the streets of the municipality.
- National Auction of the Merina de Grazalema sheep breed, scheduled for 12 October 2026 at the Fairground.
Traditional festival food
The traditional gastronomy of Benaocaz draws on popular recipes passed down through the mountain region. During local festivities and fairs, visitors have the opportunity to try hearty spoon dishes and savoury preparations very representative of the municipality's cuisine. Among the most prominent main dishes are ajo caliente (warm garlic soup), refrito (fried vegetable dish), cocido (stew) and olla (pork and chickpea stew). On the other hand, local pastry-making features highly prized bakery creations, such as los suspiros, which consist of baked sweets, and los roscos trenzados (braided ring pastries), traditional to the pastry-making of the Cádiz municipality.
Visitor guide and where to stay
To properly plan attendance at La Feria de Benaocaz and enjoy all its activities without setbacks, it is very convenient to follow a series of logistical guidelines. It is advisable to book accommodation well in advance for the celebration dates, being able to stay overnight in the municipality itself or in nearby towns, which makes it easier to follow the scheduled events during the night hours. On the days with the highest influx of public to the fairground, the preferential use of public transport is recommended, or parking the private vehicle outside the urban centre to avoid traffic congestion. Likewise, before travelling to the Cádiz municipality, it is advisable to check the official programme through institutional channels, as schedules and specific events may undergo modifications.
