Introduction and local significance

Las Fallas in Valencia are festivities catalogued as a Festival of International Tourist Interest and declared in November 2016 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This celebration officially takes place for this edition from 11 to 19 March 2027 in the municipality of Valencia, in the Comunitat Valenciana. Previous events include the Acto de Tambores de Cuaresma on 5 March, while the absolute finale takes place with the Nit de la Cremà on 19 March.

Historical origins and tradition

This festival is celebrated in honour of San José, patron saint of carpenters, a widespread guild at the end of the 19th century in the city. According to the popular version recorded by the Marqués de Cruílles, the origin lies in the burning of wood shavings and leftover old junk by carpenters in a purifying bonfire on the eve of their patron saint. The first documented reference to Las Fallas appears in a notarial protocol dated 19 March 1777 regarding a falla in the calle de San Narciso. Over the years, these festivals have been suspended on six occasions: 1886, 1898, 1937, 1938, 1939 and 2020.

Programme and main events
