Introduction and local significance
El Día de la Hispanidad in Madrid is one of the cultural highlights of the autumn, scheduled from 8 to 12 October 2026. This year's edition is presented under the slogan "Todos los acentos del español caben en Madrid", with the United States as the guest country on the 250th anniversary of its independence. Featuring a programme that includes music, dance, exhibitions and gastronomy, the event aims to highlight the Hispanic footprint in the North American country and the diversity of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Historical origins and tradition
12 October marks the main day with the commemoration of the National Day. This day combines institutional tradition with a tribute to the State through the parade of the Security Forces, the Armed Forces and other institutions, presided over by the King and Queen. The festivity is completed with a cultural programme that delves into our shared heritage. Standout activities include cycles such as the Pintura de castas exhibition at the Casa Museo Lope de Vega and screenings such as the documentary We the Hispanos at Alcalá 31, which explore the historical and cultural connections between Spain and the United States.
Programme and main events
The cultural agenda features over 150 events spread across venues such as Plaza de España, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Puente del Rey and the Teatros del Canal. The musical offering ranges from the World Street Brass Band and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval to artists like Sebastián Yatra and Marta Sánchez, alongside flamenco performances from the Corral de la Morería. It is essential to check the official programme of the edition to organise your visits, as times and venues may vary. In addition to music, the programme includes diverse experiences such as the NFL Culture Club Madrid exhibition at the Fundación Ortega-Marañón, running from 8 to 10 October, and various dance proposals.
Traditional festival food
Gastronomy plays a prominent role with the gathering "Ágave y Maíz: el Gran Festival Mexicano de la Gastronomía", held at Madrid Río from 9 to 11 October. This space brings together taquerías and products such as nixtamalised corn (maíz nixtamalizado) and agave spirits, alongside cooking contests and live cooking sessions. At the same time, municipal markets such as Barceló, La Cebada, Antón Martín and San Isidro participate with tastings, live music and themed entertainment. These proposals offer visitors an immersion into the flavours and culinary traditions linked to Hispanic heritage.
Visitor guide and where to stay
As the events are spread across different parts of the capital, planning is essential. On days with the highest attendance, it is best to use the public transport network or park your vehicle outside the centre to avoid traffic restrictions. Before travelling, check the latest version of the official programme to confirm schedules and access details. It is recommended to book accommodation in advance, as demand increases during these dates. Staying in the capital or in nearby towns with good transport links makes it easier to follow the events, especially evening ones, bearing in mind that some experiences such as the NFL exhibition require prior registration.
