Introduction and local significance

The Carnaval Internacional de Puerto de la Cruz transforms this municipality in Tenerife into a key date on the island's festive calendar. This edition takes place from 6 to 22 February 2026 and is dedicated monographically to Mexico as its thematic inspiration, reflected in the urban set design and ornamental decorations. High civic participation and the involvement of local groups define this celebration, which features unique events spread across the streets of the historic centre and the official venue set up in the coastal area.

Historical origins and tradition

The traditions of this event are deeply rooted in the popular culture of northern Tenerife, highlighting endearing figures such as the mascarita (masked character) and the pescadora carnavalera (carnival fisherwoman) as genuine symbols. Among the most unique rituals on the programme are the performance of Matar la Culebra (Killing the Snake) and the participation of deeply rooted groups such as the murgas (satirical carnival bands) Diablos Locos, Tiralenguas, Irónicos, Trapaseros, Trinkosos and the local group Las Parlanchinas. This edition pays a well-deserved tribute to José Jordán García, known as Pepe, who serves as the herald after clocking up seventy-five years of experiences in these festivities and being recognised as the longest-standing máscara. Furthermore, the programme highlights the career of the Fanfarria de Puerto de la Cruz for its forty-seven years providing musical accompaniment to the carnival. The festive spirit is complemented by cultural and motoring displays, such as the exhibition of vintage Mercedes-Benz cars on Avenida de Colón and the staging of the traditional LIII Rally del Valle of vintage cars.

Programme and main events

The official programme of the Carnaval Internacional de Puerto de la Cruz covers weeks of intense activity that formally kick off with the official opening, the reading of the opening proclamation and the presentation of the candidates in the Plaza de Concejil. Among the most prominent events are the galas to elect the King, the Adult Queen, the Gran Dama and the Children's Throne, held at the Recinto del Carnaval located on the Explanada del Muelle. The streets of the town also host hugely popular and eagerly awaited events such as the Gran Coso Apoteósico parade, the thirty-sixth edition of the Mascarita Ponte Tacón Men's Marathon, adult and children's fancy dress competitions, and the symbolic Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine). The days are completed with unique offerings such as the Entrecalles circuit through the historic centre and music with open-air street dances (verbena) to close on the final days. To check the full details of schedules and specific locations for each day, please consult the official programme available on the information sheet.

Traditional festival food

During the days of the festivities, street activity in the municipality is complemented by the local dining options available around the urban and coastal areas. Visitors attending the various festive events have the opportunity to discover local establishments and enjoy traditional Canarian cuisine in the premises open to the public throughout the carnival period.

Visitor guide and where to stay

The main events are concentrated in the Recinto del Carnaval, located on the Explanada del Muelle, as well as in the squares and streets of the town's historic centre. It is advisable to book accommodation well in advance to secure a room within the municipality itself or in nearby towns, making it easier to follow the night-time events and live music without relying on long road journeys. On peak days, it is preferable to use public transport or leave your vehicle in designated car parks outside the town centre. Before travelling, it is highly recommended to check for updates to the official programme in case of any changes to timings or event planning.
