Introduction and local significance

The Carnaval de Yunquera is celebrated this year from 27 February to 1 March 2026 in this town in the province of Málaga, located in the heart of the Sierra de las Nieves region. This festive event attracts numerous visitors eager to enjoy an atmosphere rooted in local traditions and community participation. The official programme includes various recreational and cultural activities that transform the streets of the municipality over several consecutive days. The Carnaval de Yunquera stands out for combining theatrical performances, parades, and highly anticipated gastronomic events for the locals.

Historical origins and tradition

Local archives preserve graphic testimonies of the evolution of this festival, highlighting video recordings made by Pedro López and Isabel Toledo during the years 1989 and 1994 through their channel "Telecable Yunquera". These recordings allow us to verify the continuity of customs that have managed to endure over the decades in the municipality. One of the most unique moments in the festive calendar is the traditional Entierro de la Sardina, a funeral procession that departs from the Plaza de la Constitución. This parade is accompanied by music from the Banda Municipal de Música de Yunquera and requires all participants to adhere to a strict mourning dress code to symbolically bid farewell to the festivities.

Programme and main events

The festive atmosphere begins weeks before the main dates with various cultural activities organised in the municipality. Among these preliminary events are the carnival crafts workshop held at the Biblioteca Municipal and the school parade "A Todo Carnaval" featuring students from CEIP Sierra de las Nieves. The preliminary agenda also includes theatrical performances at the Casa de la Cultura Federico García Lorca and a performance by the murga "Los Máquina". Once the official weekend begins, the programme kicks off with a grand pajama party in the Plaza de la Constitución and the institutional event for Día de Andalucía at the Casa de la Cultura. On Saturday, the carnival parade, enlivened by Charanga X, takes centre stage before the adult costume contest and the jury's decision. The night is rounded off with performances by Grupo Radio 80 and a continuous session from DJs José Montes and Juan Mendoza. On Sunday, the focus shifts to the children with a parade and the show "El Color de la Alegría" by La Carpa, as well as a charity tombola benefiting Manos Unidas and a concert by the group Más que Amigos, leading up to the final segment with the burial of the sardine.

Traditional festival food

  • Buñuelos con chocolate: This is the most emblematic culinary creation of this time in the municipality. This traditional recipe is enjoyed collectively during the children's carnival days and coincides with the Entierro de la Sardina in the Plaza de la Constitución. Its preparation provides the characteristic sweet touch with which attendees recharge their energy between the various scheduled events and parades.

Visitor guide and where to stay

Most of the festive events are concentrated in two main locations in the municipality: the Plaza de la Constitución and the Casa de la Cultura Federico García Lorca. Those wishing to actively participate in the adult costume contest should note that prior registration is mandatory and they must be present at the designated starting point of the parade. A similar rule applies to child participants wishing to compete for awards in their category. Due to the increase in visitors to the Sierra de las Nieves region during these dates, it is advisable to make accommodation reservations well in advance. During peak times of public attendance, it is highly recommended to use public transport or park vehicles in designated areas outside the urban centre to facilitate access on foot to the festival venues.
